When her father leaves the Church, Margaret Hale is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire to move with her family to the North of England. Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton, Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice.

In North and South Gaskell skillfully fused individual feeling with social concern and in Margaret Hale created one of the mostoriginal heroines of Victorian literature.

Many thought provoking ideas to ponder. Written 150 years ago. Still current!! Capitalism—social justice — facing issues of the time. Getting proximate with people we don’t know.

I listened to the audiobook this time around because I wanted to make sure to catch all the details. The narration did not disappoint - there were various accents especially do differentiate between the regions and I thought it well done.

North and South is a classic written in 1855 and reflects a lot of the issues of that time but is still relevant to today. Gaskell brings up thought-provoking topics such as religion, work, the justice system, and how to live a meaningful and happy life.

It's not just a romance, either, but the romance is good. I'm not sure you can get a better guy in literature than the hard-working and smart but also sensitive and sweet Mr. Thornton.

I highly recommend it for anyone. I first watched the period drama ages ago which got me into the book. Both are great.

This was a fantastic listen. I thoroughly enjoyed all, from start to finish. The narration could not have been any better and the overall production was flawless. There are few audio books that I can more strongly recommend.
