Histoire
Ever since his astonishing victory in the 1991 PGA Championship, John Daly has enthralled fans with his big drives, bigger personality, and "Grip It and Rip It" approach to golf - and to life. Usually seen with a Marlboro Light dangling from his lip, John is the unchained, unpredictable, unapologetic bad boy of professional golf. My Life in and out of the Rough is a thrillingly - and sometimes shockingly - candid memoir of a larger-than-life athlete battling assorted addictions (alcohol, gambling, chocolate, sex), his weight, and, perhaps worst of all, divorce lawyers.

NHL tough guys all tell the same story. They all grew up dreaming of skating in the big league as stars. Then one day, a coach tells them the only way to make it is to drop the gloves. And every guy says the same thing: I'll do whatever it takes to play in the NHL. Not Stu Grimson, though. When he was offered a contract to patrol the ice for the Calgary Flames, he said no thanks, and went to university instead. And that's the way Grimson has approached his career and his life: on his own terms.

In his prime, few could dispute Bobby Hull's athletic brilliance - the first to have five fifty-goal seasons, the highest scorer on the 1976 Canada Cup team, the first to use the slapshot as a scoring weapon, and the first hockey player to sign a million-dollar contract. With his body-builder torso, and his 100 mph volleys across a rink, the world of hockey glory was his to lose. And he did. With his publicized marital troubles and his defection from the NHL to the WHA, Hull's star began to fall, leaving him broke and in exile from the game.

Description
Hockey's most polarizing figure takes us inside the game, shedding light on not only what goes on behind closed doors but also what makes professional athletes tick.
As one of the NHL's most polarizing players, Sean Avery turned the rules of professional hockey on their head. For 13 seasons, he played for some of the most storied franchises in the league, including the Detroit Red Wings, the Los Angeles Kings, and the New York Rangers, making his mark in each city as a player who was sometimes loved, sometimes despised, and always controversial.
In Offside, Avery displays his trademark candor about the world of pro hockey and does for it what Jim Bouton's game-changing Ball Four did for baseball. Avery goes deep inside the sport to reveal every aspect of pro athletes' lives, from how they spend their money and their nights off to how they stay sharp and conditioned and employed. Avery also examines his singular career path - while playing the talented villain on ice, he skated out of character in the off-season, taking on unexpected and unprecedented roles: Vogue intern, fashion model, advertising executive, restaurateur, gay rights advocate, and many more.
Rollickingly honest and compelling throughout, Offside transcends the sports book genre and offers a rare, unvarnished glimpse into the world of 21st-century hockey through the eyes of one of its most original and memorable players.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"Offside... may be described as Ken Dryden's The Game rewritten by Hunter S. Thompson." (Globe and Mail)
“[A] lively, dishy bildungsroman on skates.” (Sports Illustrated)
“[Avery] pulls no punches... Love him or loathe him, Avery is unapologetically himself in his tell-all.” (TSN)

get alittle of what you expect and alot you didnt.
In true avery fashion, he is boastful and self aggrandizing. However it only adds to the wild story of one of hockeys most divisive figures. I hated him on the ice but since his retirement he has shown his true self and paints an interesting contrast to his character on the ice. He is honest about his flaws and unapologetic with his success. I kind of wish we knew more of this when he was playing, maybe I would have enjoyed him more. give it a try you wont be disappointed.

The Trump of hockey stories
Lots of self aggrandising by Avery. He makes himself sound like the second coming of Wayne Gretzky. Book is entertaining, though I wonder if Avery originally wrote it in crayon.

As a Hockey Player this book was very good and I loved listening to it
I liked how he didn’t hold back and he said exactly what life was like, a lot of people hold back some details when telling life stories so they don’t get in trouble or don’t get embarassed but I liked how he said exactly how it happened. He voice went really well with story, you could hear the emotion in his voice at exciting parts and sad parts as well. Great Read

Solid Book
Loved hearing Sean’s side of things. I do think his memory of things is somewhat biased, especially the “Fight” with Ladislav Smid. Sean’s version is a little different than the reality. I really enjoyed the book and saw a different side him. I would recommend this book.
