As the author explains, "Old Wounds was sparked by a story I heard one evening on the CBC radio program 'As It Happens,' just as Myra does in this story. When I heard it, I wondered what had happened all those years ago when this plane disappeared. Who was waiting at home for the vanished pilot? What happened—or didn't happen—because he never came home? Myra appeared in my imagination and told me her story."
