A news-making and electrifying portrait of sports phenomenon Caitlin Clark, whose dramatic ascendance in college basketball and now in the WNBA has captured the attention of media and fans unlike any other female team-sport athlete in history—by award-winning USA TODAY columnist and television commentator Christine Brennan.

America has never seen an athlete quite like Caitlin Clark. Attracting record-shattering attendance and TV ratings, she has riveted the nation with her famous logo threes and thrilling passes and changed how fans across the country view women’s sports. Drawing on dozens of extensive interviews and exclusive, behind-the-scenes reporting, veteran journalist Christine Brennan narrates Clark’s rise—including the formative experiences that led to her scoring more points than any woman or man in major college basketball history—and delivers fascinating new details about Clark’s Olympic snub by USA Basketball, the safety concerns around her that led to charter flights for all players, the WNBA’s lack of preparation for heightened national scrutiny, and troubling outbreaks of jealousy and resentment as a white player became the top story in a predominantly Black league.

The 2024 season was a watershed. Always taking the high road in the face of criticism, Clark proceeded to write herself into WNBA record books as one of the league’s most talented rookies ever. And her winning persona—on full display whether surrounded by children begging for autographs or reporters hanging on her every word—made Clark such a fan favorite that increasingly larger arenas needed to be found to accommodate the hordes who traveled hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of miles to watch her play.

Clark arrived as a sports and cultural icon a little more than fifty years after the passage of Title IX, the 1972 law that opened the floodgates for girls and women to play sports in America. On Her Game is a sports story, certainly, but it’s also the story of a nation falling in love with what it has created because of that law—millions of new athletes, led by the magical Caitlin Clark.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Women’s sports are experiencing increasing popularity, and author/narrator Christine Brennan posits that much of it has to do with the rise of basketball phenom Caitlin Clark. Brennan’s clear, sometimes adulatory, prose is matched by her resonant tones and energetic cadence. Brennan recounts Clark’s journey from the NCAA playoffs through her rookie year with the Indiana Pacers. Not dwelling on Clark’s occasional hubris—“I don’t want anyone to be better than me”—Brennan stresses Clark’s confidence and thoughtfulness. Brennan doesn’t shy away from the fact that Clark is white and many WNBA players are Black, Clark’s unprecedented rocket to fame is related to perceptions of her whiteness. Brennan’s approachable sportscaster-like style enhances these observations of a new era in women’s sports."

I am a relatively new fan of the WNBA, following the league for the first time with the 2025 season and I will admit it was Caitlin Clark and the hype around her that brought me to the league. Being interested in the hype I followed mainly the Indiana Fever and it is that team, not just Caitlin Clark, that blew me away. I hope someone does a book about that 2025 Fever team because there was something very special about them. It brought me back to Jordan's Chicago Bulls team that had Rodman. I also discovered some of the most exciting basketball played by some of the coolest players. This is something missing in the men's game, gone for a long time. The women are bringing flair and excitement back to basketball. I recognized this watching many of the 2025 games and now craving the 2026 season. That said I need a back story and this was it.

I had to learn more about Caitlin Clark and this was an excellent account of how Caitlin Clark came to be and how the hype behind her benefitted the WNBA beyond anything they expected. Listening to this story really supports my own perspective on the Caitlin Clark effect. Much like there wouldn't have been a Jordan's Bulls team without Scottie Pippen there wouldn't have been a Caitlin Clark effect without Angel Reese. Angel's immaturity and likely jealousy of the attention Caitlin was getting in college, caused her to mimic the John Cena, "You can't see me", to an extreme to her and it's that audacity that fired up the hype amongst the mostly, until then, silent White crowd. They now had their female Larry Bird, someone they could relate to, cheer for and push. CC's humbleness and enjoyment of sharing her appreciation of fans and other players skills just makes her that much more endearing and that is conveyed in this book.

This is a 5 star look at a great player and the effect that player is having on a league that always should have had the push it's only just getting now. As an Audible review, the narrator did an awesome job reading the work and the Story was extremely engaging. If you are fan of needle moving people or the WNBA this is a book for you.
