À propos de cet audio

Newbery Honor Book!

A gorgeously written, hopeful middle-grade novel in verse about a young girl who must leave Syria to move to the US, perfect for fans of Jason Reynolds and Aisha Saeed.

Jude never thought she’d be leaving her beloved older brother and father behind, all the way across the ocean in Syria. But when things in her hometown start becoming volatile, Jude and her mother are sent to live in Cincinnati with relatives.

At first, everything in America seems too fast and too loud. The American movies that Jude has always loved haven’t quite prepared her for starting school in the US - and her new label of “Middle Eastern”, an identity she’s never known before.

But this life also brings unexpected surprises - there are new friends, a whole new family, and a school musical that Jude might just try out for. Maybe America, too, is a place where Jude can be seen as she really is.

This lyrical, life-affirming story is about losing and finding home and, most importantly, finding yourself.

The voice of the main character helps you to see life from the point of view of an immigrant in middle school. This book can help you to see some of the realities of living a life where home is two places. It was good to be able to picture one immigrant story to stretch my thinking and help me to love more and embrace more people into my own story.

A Great Book to Learn from and Enjoy

I loved how this story of a Syrian girl was told with so much heart. I was able to understand the experience of a refugee with more empathy and compassion. I also appreciated learning about the duality of cultures - how to stay close to your ‘home’ while living in a new country that is also your home. I read and listened to the story at the same time which I really enjoyed. I felt that it helped me to process the information in a deeper way.

Incredibly well written
