À propos de cet audio
An unforgettable story of an ordinary woman in astonishing circumstances who defies the odds.
Timea Nagy was 20 years old when she answered a newspaper ad in Budapest, Hungary, calling for young women to work as babysitters and housekeepers in Canada. Hired by what seemed like a legitimate recruitment agency, Timea left her home believing she would earn good money to send back to her family. What she didn't know was that she'd been lured by a ring of international human traffickers - and her life would never again be the same.
Upon her arrival in Toronto, she was forced into sex labour in some of the city's seediest nightclubs, starved and controlled by her agents, and brainwashed to believe she was to blame for her situation. The only way she'd be free was when her debt was paid - but, no matter how hard she worked, that debt seemed only to go up, not down.
Out of the Shadows is a gripping, heartbreaking, and eye-opening journey deep into the underworld of human trafficking and the sex trade, told in riveting detail by one brave survivor. At once tragic and powerfully redemptive, Timea Nagy's story will stay with you long after you've heard the last moments.

Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

Out of the Shadows is a book filled with uncomfortable yet unforgettable anecdotes, keen insights and painful memories for Nagy...a compelling first-hand account of the murky world of human trafficking." There are no words.
I always view 5-star reviews with a bit of skepticism as I know how easy it is to fake them. Having finished this book, I can honestly say that the reviews on it are telling the truth. Timea's story is wild from start to finish, nearly unbelievable at parts with how much disregard she received from institutions and safeguards that were supposed to help her. It's particularly difficult to hear when you've lived in some of the places she mentions; having the wool over your eyes pulled back just to see how much this situation is at your front door is very sobering.
I feel for her in so many ways, and I'm gratified to know she's found purpose in the work she now does to bring awareness to human trafficking, as well as having found love, friendship, and true safety in her new home.
Beautifully written, beautifully narrated, and 10000% worth a read.

Opening my eyes and my heart ❤️
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I bought and began to listen to “Out of the Shadows” but It didn’t take me long to feel my heart open and sometimes break for this young woman, Timea Nagy. I heard myself saying the words, “Don’t fall into the trap, Timea. Don’t let your fear draw you down that dark rabbit hole.” But everyone must have her/his own life experiences that will mold them into who they will become. For people like Timea the red hot hammer of the forge will create the strength and resolve to rise like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes to become a positive force for freedom and compassion for women (and sometimes men) everywhere. The buying and selling of human beings everywhere must stop. Timea is part of my global family and no words can describe how proud I am of her. She personifies one of my favourite sayings: “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”
And thanks to Audible for making individuals’ stories available for all beings to hear. The fire inside of me has been rekindled.

Gut wrenching story, unfortunate inaccuracies
I’m glad I’ve listened to Timea’s story, she is talking about extremely important issues when she shares all the horrific things that happened to her in Canada (and in Hungary). There are two things that I need to mention for a fair review.
I grew up in the same era in Hungary, Budapest. She is only 3 years older than me. Where life in Hungary in the ‘80s is described there are many inaccuracies and exaggerations which make her story less credible to me. First of all, it was socialism and not communism in Hungary. Second, by the ‘80s there were no such things as “Levi’s jeans were illegal” or Coca Cola was not available. Most western products were available by 1989 and they were definitely not illegal.
When she describes seeing a “modern” toilet for the first time at Pearson Airport in 1998 I was shaking my head in frustration. In 1998 many Hungarian households had efficient modern toilet tanks such as the one she saw at the airport. Were weren’t 50 years behind. There were malls, shopping centres, big box stores in Hungary, and by that time you could get anything you wanted-worst case you drove 3 hours to Vienna to buy something that wasn’t available in Hungary.
The other bothersome thing was the narration. Apart from the narrator’s cringe worthy attempt to demonstrate male voices, someone who can actually pronounce Hungarian words would have been a more appropriate choice. János(h), TimikE(not Timika?!) etc. It was annoying to listen to her butchering the dialogues.
Overall important and interesting read, though.

Inspiring! A story of the human spirit
This is not only a story about the ugly world of human trafficking, but it is also a story that shines a light on how trauma can lead to more trauma. It reminds us that people don’t always get to choose their circumstances but instead that they are often the result of many traumas. It is the inspiring true story of how one woman has risen out of the trauma through helping others not only on an individual level but also on a community, national and international level.

A Must Read!
As a society we know so little about human trafficking and the seedy underworld that controls this. We need to be aware of young men and women that look like they may need help and get out of our comfort zones and try to help. Bravo Tamika you are a true hero!
