“They’re your family, you dumb little dickhead; even dogs don’t piss on their own family.”

In what remains of post-apocalyptic America, Deaver Teague is a range-rider hauling a saddle across the desert: his horse has died and he’s gotta get to Moab to report in. He’s picked up by a traveling theatre troupe that’s three generations of the same family; having grown up an orphan, Teague is both weirded out and jealous of this family’s dynamic.

This is an interesting novella, and while pretty heavy on the author’s Mormon religion, it doesn’t preach at you. The ending is a little trite but the overall uplifting theme was well-intentioned.

As always, Stefan Rudnicki brings this tale to life with his outstanding narration.

Solid story, killer narration
