I love how Hans described in detail his entire journey of WW2 and well past it till present day. Unlike most memoirs from that era this one is entirely different keeping the atrocities of the war descriptions a tad muted but compensating by painting a masterful picture of social aspects and coping with extreme circumstances. It makes this book very relatable on a humane level. Most outstanding to me were the last few chapters describing his live and captivity survival in Georgia’s gulags. Absolute must read / listen to.

Having read a number of biographies with a World War II theme, Von Luck’s is simply the best of them. A must read.
