Description

Take a tour through the horror paperback novels of two iconic decades...if you dare. Hear shocking plot summaries that invoke devil worship, satanic children, and haunted real estate! Horror author and vintage paperback book collector Grady Hendrix offers killer commentary and witty insight on these trashy thrillers that tried so hard to be the next Exorcist or Rosemary's Baby. Complete with story summaries and artist and author profiles, this unforgettable volume dishes on familiar authors like V. C. Andrews and R. L. Stine, plus many more who've faded into obscurity. Also included are recommendations for which of these forgotten treasures are well worth your listening time and which should stay buried.

A Good Way To Find Some Cool Old Horror Books

I found this book be quite good, Through listening, I was able to create a list of books I'm interested in reading. This was my reason for listening to this audio book in the first place, so it performs a service. I appreciate the descriptions of various sub genre of horror books (vampires, satanic, zombies, and animal horror etc.), and learning about which books were which sub genre. Various writers were mentioned. A few artists were also mentioned for their contributions in creating the fantastic cover art of horror books of this period (such as George Zeal), and I would have liked to have heard even more of them, I also appreciated learning the history of when horror books really started to take off, and hearing about what was going on in America at the time, and how what was happening over the following years shaped what sub genre horror types people were interested in reading. Pro tip: Conveniently, there happens to be a Paperbacks From Hell book list on Good Reads, if like me, you get tired of stopping listening and making a note of the books and authors.

Summaries for the most part, but also quite good.

I picked this one up at a whim, as I have seen a variety of YouTube videos on horror novel covers and figured I would check this out.

First off, Timothy Andrés Pabon is a fantastic narrator. Their voice fills the role perfectly and I can't really imagine anyone else doing the narration for this. They keep it entertaining, exciting, and stop it from becoming the slog I think it would have been had I read this rather than listening to the audio book. Five stars for their narration!

As for the book itself, it's pretty much what it says it is to some degree. A lot of it is Hendrix listing off a few different horror novels with sentence long synopsis and where they fit in the grander horror scope of things. For more popular or prolific writers, they give a bit more of a description, but for the most part be ready for short descriptions of books over and over again.

There were a few little nuggets of interesting fact and history stuck into the book, but all in all, unless you are looking for some new old books, your mind is going to start glossing over at some point and you won't quite care as much. (which is why I am giving this book 4 rather than 5 stars) Hendrix did their research, and quite a bit of it at that. I was impressed and it was interesting hearing about some of the authors that they went into detail about.

I also give full props to their handling of the satanic panic and Michelle Remembers. The amount of details provided about the sheer insanity of what happens in that 'true story' book, and the fact that Michelle married her therapist does an excellent point in showing just how stupid it was... too bad people didn't recognize that in the midst of the Satanic Panic.

Overall, this was an interesting dive into the world of Horror fiction from the 70s and 80s. If you are a horror lover or like weird bits of history, this is a book for you. I highly recommend you get the audio book vs the physical book, as I think the audio book is the best way to absorb all the summaries presented in this book.

Entertaining and funny history of vintage horror

Really entertaining and enjoyable. Almost constantly funny and occasionally wildly distasteful. Easy to recommend.

A Fascinating Essay on the Horror Genre

I am a huge fan of Grady Hendrix novels so I chose to read this book to see where his source material comes from. I did enjoy learning more about the horror genre and the fads of writing these paperback novels through the decades but I will say that sometimes this book - when discussing different sub genres within horror - can get into the habit of simply listing titles, which in an audio book can get a little tough to follow. I’ll also say that because this book was discussing the horror genre that there is quite a lot of discussion of depravity and themes used for shock value so there was quite a lot of mentions of assault in the book which, though it wasn’t always graphically described, did become too much for me.

Great For Horror Enthusiasts!

A quick, fun, insightful look at the gross, weird, and downright shocking horror pulp novels of the 1970's-1980's. The book details not only some of the highs and lows of the genre, but it also shows a transition of the different sorts of content. It's very interesting to see how the industry changed over the decade, how it rose and fell, even if there isn't a clear explanation about why horror novels boomed and dissipated. Hendrix's quick wit and unique style is clear throughout the book, and while I don't know if every one of these books will make it to my TBR, they definitely have my attention!
