Description

Life in the magical mess of the Detroit Free Zone is never easy. When you’re laboring under the curse of a certain prideful, overbearing dragon, it can be down right impossible.

My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I’m a Cleaner. At least, I used to be. Thanks to the supernatural bad luck that turns everything I do against me, these days I’m more of a walking disaster. Getting rid of this curse is the only way to get my life back. Unfortunately, dragon magic is every bit as sneaky and deadly as the monsters behind it, and just as hard to beat.

But I’ve never been one to take her doom at face value. Cornered doesn’t mean defeated, and in an awakened city that rules herself, dragons are no longer the biggest powers around.

I liked it

I liked the characters, and the story wasn't formulaic - interesting with growth and nothing too predictable.

Solid story with great performance

Actors ability to convey genuine emotion gave the characters even more life than the authors writing style already had. Voice actor's multiple tones and pitches in one voice for dragons worked wonders in bringing those characters to life.

Text copy of this book would be a solid enjoyable read, but the Actor breathed their own touch of vibrancy and life into the story which added greatly to the existing work.

Beautifully frustrating and unpredictable.

Loved this even better than the first book. There is a lot of repetition, which works for an audiobook format, but the story has so many twists and turns that leave me on the edge of my seat, even for the parts I thought may have been boring. Also, as a reader who started with the DFZ series, this is an awesome blend of deeper exposition and plot with high stakes at every turn. As for performance, Zeller loses Nik's accent slightly in this one, but my goodness, her range of voices and subtle but definitive changes of personality in this book absolutely blew me away. Amazing work with that!

Worth It!

This series is so addictive! And this is the first audiobook that has had me whooping and hollering in response to the events. I was captivated by every second, and plan to hopping straight into the next.

Not wowed but still good.

Overall the universe is good but the story is getting a bit formulaic and was a bit rushed at the end. Not bad and still compelling but it was more like "well finally she got them" kind of catharsis rather than "wow that's totally mind blowing." Though given the new occupation change at the end there it does make me want to find out how things pan out in the next book. Now if you'll excuse me that's exactly what I'm going to do.

Pretty good

Book was pretty good. Liked the characters. The reader was good but I really disliked the voice used for the dragon/father. It made my throat hurt just to listen to it!!

No sophmore slump here, imo

After listening to the first book I wasn't in a rush to dive into this book. I felt the first book shallow and gimicky. But I am really busy and need something I would come in and out of without feeling like I missed too much. I also wanted to know if Opal and Nic were going to get togeather. (-_o)

I would disagree that it is the weaker of the two books. The first book was interesting concept but I liked that there was more character development in this book. Particularly how Opal is more imperfect in this book. While I can see how lt might annoy somepeople, because the first person narration the character is self aware of her own self adsorption and often needs to rationalise her choices to the reader. I am interesting to see what kind of person she can become.

Where it does fall short the author claerly has a longer series in mind and tried to put too many story lines in one book. Which fair warning none of them really get resolved in this book. Surprisingly most of the story lines are relatable. Realizing your parents are trying their best, the complications of having a platonic yet intamate friendship with people of the opposite gender, the world no longer excepting the narrative that the hero is a victim ext...

If you liked the first book I recomend giving this one a go.

this is one of the best stories I've heard in a long time and quite frankly I absolutely can't wait for the next one to come out I get the same feeling hearing this as I did reading Harry Potter but I think I prefer this as it's a little more mature... honestly I can't Rave enough about it it's absolutely awesome

Book 1 is better

There is a lot of repetition - you'd think this is a book for young kids by the number of times a fact or feeling is told to us again and again (even more than in the first book).
All the concepts are amazing - the world is rich and interesting as well as the characters... but something in the book just falls flat. I think it's the fact that the main character keeps on saying she is useless and by the end of the story I've come to believe it. She is useless, despite all the tools she should have (intelligence, education, magic...). We are told that she used to make bank, and that she can move couches by herself, and so on... but when it comes down to it, a lot of the time it doesn't seem like it. It feels like the author doesn't know her character completely. Maybe I'd just like it if she accepted that some things are out of her control and that's fine rather than hearing her feel useless, try something stupid, and then blame herself.

I'd say hold back on this one until we see what book 3 brings us. I hope it's not more of the same and the main character can either stop being the damsel in distress or come to terms with it.

Amazing

The book was just as good as the first! Kept me on the edge of my seat! Finished it in a day! But the cliff hanger!! My gosh I need the next book ASAP! So good love that there was more info on the characters!
