Description

When Peter Mayle and his wife traded England's long, gray winters and damp summers for life in southern France, they entered an enchanting, wonderful, sometimes bewildering world. Now, share their adventures, pleasures, and frustrations: the joys and occasional hazards of wining and dining in France, taking part in goat races, attending a Pavorotti concert under the stars - and much more. Meet Provence's unique characters: a wary truffle hunter, a gourmet in a track suit, the wise and crafty Massot - and many more.

Funny, touching, endearing - Peter Mayle's Provence proves the adage that while you may not be able to escape from it all, you sure can have fun trying.

Relaxing and light hearted read

If Provence is, in fact the warm, endearing place Peter Mayle has portrayed in his books then I am ready to pack up and move there tomorrow.

The chapters are almost complete in themselves, in the way of James Herriot's books, and so are easily read and easily put down again.

The characters are realistic, and Mayle's dry British humor is delightful. I thoroughly enjoyed these books and hope others will, too!

Peter Mayle's Provence Redux

What did you love best about Peter Mayle's Provence: Including 'A Year in Provence' and 'Toujours Provence'?

Being able to listen to the author, himself, reading was quite a joy. Not that Mr. Macnee's mellifluous voice was, in any way, of a diminished quality. I had read all of Mr. Mayle's books in the past; and thought it was time to revist them via the spoken work. I was not dissapointed.

I would like nothing better to be able to listen to all of Mr. Mayle's Provence books, especially HOTEL PASTIS, in the AUDIBLE format.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This was not the kind of "edge of your seat" book that I wanted to rush through to get to the ending. Reading Mayle reminds me of why I sail.. It's the journey, not the destination.

In fact, I do not want these lovely books to ever end!

Mayle delivers with fantastic tales of France

What made the experience of listening to Peter Mayle's Provence: Including 'A Year in Provence' and 'Toujours Provence' the most enjoyable?

I've listened to Peter Mayle's "French Lessons" three times and now I'm headed toward listen No. 2 of "Provence." Few writers are as clever and witty in that lovely English way as Mayle is, and few make the French such delightful characters when just being themselves. Highly recommended book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laughed a great deal.

Warm and funny, a feast for the imagination of any francophile or foodie. And Patrick Macnee's performance is simply superb.

Wonderful

Mayles writes of his first and later years in Provence in a way that beautifully and potently - without being wordy! - evokes the beauty and character of the land and the sense of community there that made the human relations beautiful too. -- full of human quirkiness, humor, warmth, people helping each other -- true - often on their timeline not yours ;) - - the prominence of delicious food as a feature of Provencal culture, tells of projects, hail at the end of a sunny picnic . . . just life stuff. It's intelligent, full of humor and warmth and an excellent example how life can be when we live with community that recognizes it is community - which is extended family. This is hard to achieve in our dense cities and techno culture where nature barely features -- but it's really good to read someone's journal of how it actually was, even with human foibles. We CAN do it, even in cities -- if we remember the value, even necessity of living this way.
And if you're not into thinking about this stuff!! -- it's just fun and uplifting. Clearly, I recommend it. ;)

Enchanting!

I re-listen to this book twice every year. Once in the cold of winter sitting in front of a fire sipping a glass of port, and once in the summer by the swimming pool enjoying raspberry lemonade. It’s that kind of book!

Great pleasure

Peter Mayle and Patrick Macnee are the perfect narrators for these two books about the pleasures and exasperations of the Mayles’ first years in Provence. Some passages are hilarious. Some are bittersweet. Overall great listening fun.

Needed to be longer - more travel snippits

A good book I guess leaves you wanting more...but these REALLY needed to be longer books. The stories are lovely and the author narrated them well.
