The first book promised a lot of potential - a scientist using his intelligence to thrive in an apocalypse, but book 2 pretty much stifled the idea with this genre's trope of plot armor i.e. MC no longer uses his brains and knowledge, but instead gain power by mindless grinding, being helped by more powerful characters (who provides cheat skills, items, and battle assistance).
