Description

From the author of Falling with Folded Wings comes a furious new fantasy series, in which a teenage, hard-case Earthling tries to earn some class . . .

Victor can’t wait to get the hell out of high school, go to the local community college on a sports scholarship, and start his own life. But that’s all put on hold when he enters his abuela’s house and somehow ends up stepping into a world unlike anything he’s ever known, filled with fantastical meta-humans; walking, talking devils; and other creatures one usually needs some serious pharmaceuticals to see.

Fanwath is no dream, though. In fact, it’s a nightmare. Sold into slavery as a pit fighter, Victor quickly learns his new home is controlled by the “System” and the only way to get ahead is to fight, kill, and collect the precious “Energy” that means the difference between a long life and an early grave. And according to his stats, Victor’s starting out at a solid zero.

Lucky for him, no one in this world has ever met his kind before—which means they have no idea what he’s really capable of. But they’re about to find out . . .

The first volume of the hit LitRPG adventure series—with more than 750,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Not bad by any means, but not my cup of tea.

Not a bad story overall, but it has some glaring issues that I personally couldn't get past.

The world Victor gets dropped into is DARK. Holy moly it's a bad place. So much so that it seems a bit unrealistic to me, even for a fantasy setting. At first he was dropped right into the seedy underbelly of society, so of course it's gonna be bad. But it just keeps getting worse even as he moves on. I find it hard to believe that in a world where beings getting summoned from other worlds regularly is a common thing, there is absolutely no protections or enforcement of it. The summoned people just have no rights or protections at all, and everyone just seems to be okay with it. There doesn't seem to be any sort of "good" forces to balance out all the bad this world seems to have, and for me that's a big downside.

As for the magic system, it seems sort of interesting, but then the MC just seems to be able to create and alter his own abilities to suite his needs. On top of that, he just seems to naturally recover from some spoiler trauma that happens to him, and it's never really explained how or why it happens. There's so very few explanations for anything in this world and system that it's just hard to get a grip on anything.

The performance of the narrator is pretty good, although his range isn't great for female characters and a lot of his voices sound pretty similar. Not a huge complaint, but a minor nit pick.

Overall, if you enjoy stories about a brawler who has Rage type skills mixed with Inspiration magic (what), then this story might be for you.

Very enjoyable listen

Great story that I struggled to put down, filled with action and some adventure. Already on book 2 now.

Great story and world building so far.

The story is immersive enough, and while the powers of the MC are a bit bland, they are entertaining. The narator though is the weak link imo. He makes everything sound like Dora the explorer. it's like watching a B movie actor trying his hardest and overshooting his mark on emotion.
