Description

Betrayed by Earth's heroes and exiled into outer space, the man-monster known as the Incredible Hulk has landed on the distant planet Sakaar, ruled by the tyrannical Red King. Sold into slavery, the Hulk becomes the Green Scar, the planet's mightiest gladiator! But his new masters get more than they bargained for when he forges a bond of brotherhood with his fellow fighters: crafty insectoid Miek, the horrific Brood, wise rock-man Korg, Shadow Warrior Hiroim, noble-born rebel Elloe, and her loyal guardsman Skee. Together, these gladiators start a revolution that could change their entire world - or destroy it.

Good Story, better than excepted

Honestly good! I just found that since the entire book was voice acted and suppose to be like listening to a movie; that there was tones of hulk and monster noises which was a bit much at times.

Weird but Entertaining Marvel Fare.. Overall 'Meh'

Yes, the "Save-The-World" concept is formulaic, the plot is sketched-out, and Greg Pak's story tries far too hard to transcend the 2-dimensional limitations imposed by a comic book format - but I quite enjoyed this offering from Marvel Audio.
In 'Planet Hulk', the green-skinned behemoth is banished to a planet threatening a civil war (one species acting as authoritarian aristocrats.. subjugating and enslaving the other sentient species in the star system). Hulk is sent to the Gladiatorial school - intended for death - but instead, he grows in fury and strength, takes on the persona of "The Green Scar", and leads a coalition of Gladiators.. eventually escaping the spectacle and inspiring resistance, rebellion, and revolution. [Bizarrely, Hulk later becomes the fulfillment of prophecy - literally melding into a planet to "save it". Aaaaand he gets married (I'm not kidding) - but I digress]..
I tried to sympathize with Pak's attempt to impose sophistication to his vision, but enjoyed the story more after I reminded myself that this is a *Comic Book* and adjusted my expectations accordingly - the foray into philosophy is distracting & somewhat baffling.

This isn't "Literature", Mr. Pak

..but so what?
The action scenes are well-scripted, the dialogue is appropriate for the story, and the descriptions are vivid enough to leave me wishing I could read the graphic novel to see how professional artists interpreted them.

The full-cast performance is emotive and impressively professional (characters sob, seethe in anger, and realistically scream in pain). Some of the voice-modulation (e.g. for "Meek".. an insectoid insurgent) results in characters that are cartoonish and hard to understand, but sound effects (e.g. explosions) and background noises (e.g. cheering crowds) generally contribute to the production rather than detract from it. Marvel Audio did an admirable job presenting a mind's-eye cinematic experience.
(Warning: Sound effects for Hulk's massive, heavy footsteps are sometimes overdone)

Pak strives for maturity - giving his characters (e.g. Hulk's gladiator companions) back-stories to give them motivation - but it's overreach (he unfortunately loses sight of what he's writing.. A COMIC BOOK!!).
Still, this quality recording is action-packed enough to be great for kids on a road-trip or a superhero fanboy like me working a boring night-shift. Despite ineffective attempts at making comicbook characters "human" (or something more), I rate this book 6.5 stars out of 10.
