I've been reading and rereading this novel since I was a teenager. Now married with kids I've listened to the audio book for the first time. It did a great job of drowning out their screams (as I survive summer break). I loved it overall except I wasn't a fan of Valek or the Commander's voices. But definitely just a preference thing. I mean, a female voice actor can only do so much to depict a male voice. I just thought Valek's was too gruff while the Commander's was to tender... maybe they should switch, haha. But overall, once again, a great escape! And the surprise ending where we were able to hear Maria (the author) give a behind the scenes of how she wrote the book was probably the most exciting part!!! A job well done to the voice actor for bringing this book to life.

I really enjoyed the voice range of the narrator, she did well with both the male and female characters and gave them all separate identities. I liked how the story focused on a food taster, and the magic system was interesting. Overall I would recommend this audio book.
