William P. Wood offers an investigator-focused behind-the-scenes procedural involving the Police Department & District Attorneys of the County of Sacramento. The plot - exploring the murder of a seemingly run-of-the-mill woman killed to obtain a heavily-encrypted Compact Disc - is frustratingly paced - often bogged down in procedural considerations - but interesting and loaded with well-reasoned and unpredictable twists & turns. Unfortunately, the characters are so predictably typecast that a trained AI could have written the dialogue. This book reads like a straight-to-video (do those still exist?) screenplay.

As to presentation: John McLain turns in an imperfect but solidly above-average reading performance. To be sure, some of his character interpretations are pretty cartoonish, but his crisp diction, pleasant baritone timbre, and spot-on cadence complement an interested, emotive tone that is easy to consume for hours. Audible Studios Inc. did an excellent job casting this project.

If you can get this 5/10-star audiobook as a 'Plus' option.. do so - it was a reasonably entertaining distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons. If Audible asks for a Credit, however, better options beckon.

Clever Story - Overly Cinematic
