Histoire
Why did Agatha Christie spend her career pretending that she was 'just' an ordinary housewife, when clearly she wasn't? As Lucy Worsley says, 'She was thrillingly, scintillatingly modern'. Her life was 'modern' too: she went surfing in Hawaii, she loved fast cars, and she was intrigued by the new science of psychology, which helped her through devastating mental illness. So why—despite all the evidence to the contrary—did Agatha present herself as a retiring Edwardian lady of leisure?

The life of Princess May of Teck is one of the great Cinderella stories in history. From a family of impoverished nobility, she was chosen by Queen Victoria as the bride for her eldest grandson, the scandalous Duke of Clarence, heir to the throne, who died mysteriously before their marriage. Despite this setback, she became queen, mother of two kings, grandmother of the current queen, and a lasting symbol of the majesty of the British throne.

The secrets of Queen Victoria's sixth child, Princess Louise, may be destined to remain hidden forever. What was so dangerous about this artistic, tempestuous royal that her life has been documented more by rumor and gossip than hard facts? When Lucinda Hawksley started to investigate, often thwarted by inexplicable secrecy, she discovered a fascinating woman, modern before her time, whose story has been shielded for years from public view.

In the latest volume of his celebrated series of Time Traveller's Guides, Ian Mortimer turns to what is arguably the most loved period in British history: the Regency (a.k.a. Georgian England). Bookended by the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789 and the death of George IV in 1830, this is the age of Jane Austen and the Romantic poets, the paintings of Constable and the gardens of Repton, the sartorial elegance of Brummell and the poetic licence of Byron, Britain's military triumphs at Trafalgar and Waterloo and the threat of revolution and the Peterloo massacre.

We know what life was like for Victoria and Albert. But what was it like for a commoner like you or me? How did it feel to cook with coal and wash with tea leaves? Drink beer for breakfast and clean your teeth with cuttlefish? Dress in whalebone and feed opium to the baby? Surviving everyday life came down to the gritty details, the small necessities and tricks of living. Drawing on Ruth's unique firsthand experience gained from living on a Victorian farm for a year, this book will teach you everything you need to know about 19th-century living.

France's iconic queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous "Let them eat cake", was alternately revered and reviled during her lifetime. For centuries since, she has been the object of debate, speculation, and the fascination so often accorded illustrious figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted child was thrust onto the royal stage and commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in European history.

When Victoria was born, in 1819, the world was a very different place. Revolution would threaten many of Europe’s monarchies in the coming decades. In Britain, a generation of royals had indulged their whims at the public’s expense, and republican sentiment was growing. The Industrial Revolution was transforming the landscape, and the British Empire was commanding ever larger tracts of the globe. In a world where women were often powerless, during a century roiling with change, Victoria went on to rule the most powerful country on earth with a decisive hand.

In the years before the First World War, the great European powers were ruled by three first cousins: King George V of Britain, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Together, they presided over the last years of dynastic Europe and the outbreak of the most destructive war the world had ever seen, a war that set twentieth-century Europe on course to be the most violent continent in the history of the world.

Entertaining and different, this is an enjoyable study of a flawed yet characterful Prince of Wales seen through the eyes of the women in his life. Edward Vll, who gave his name to the Edwardian Age and died in 1911, was King of England for the final 10 years of his life. He was 59 when at last he came to the throne. Known as Bertie, the eldest son of Victoria and Albert, he was bullied by both his parents.

Histoire
The New York Times bestselling author of the Six Tudor Queens series explores the private side of the legendary king Henry VIII and his dramatic and violent reign in this extraordinary historical novel. Young Henry began his rule as a magnificent and chivalrous Renaissance prince who embodied every virtue. He had all the qualities to make a triumph of his rule, yet we remember only the violence. Henry famously broke with the Pope, founding the Church of England and launching a religious revolution that divided his kingdom. He beheaded two of his wives and cast aside two others.

Heiresses: Surely they are among the luckiest women on earth. Are they not to be envied, with their private jets and Chanel wardrobes and endless funds? Yet all too often those gilded lives have been beset with trauma and despair. Before the 20th century a wife’s inheritance was the property of her husband, making her vulnerable to kidnap, forced marriages, even confinement in an asylum. And in modern times, heiresses fell victim to fortune-hunters who squandered their millions.

King George V predicted that his son, Edward VIII, would destroy himself within a year of succeeding to the throne. In December 1936 he was proved right, and the world’s press revealed the king was abandoning his throne to marry Wallis Simpson. A life spent in the shadow of his charismatic elder brother left the new king, George VI, magnificently unprepared for the demands of ruling the kingdom and empire. Drawing on personal accounts from the royal archives, Deborah Cadbury uncovers the very private conflict.

Description
"Worsley gives us Victoria in all her infinite variety - queen and mother, matriach and minx. I loved it." (Daisy Goodwin, author of The American Heiress, The Fortune Hunter, and Victoria: A Novel)
This program includes an introduction read by the author, as well as a bonus interview exclusive to the audiobook.
The story of the queen who defied convention and defined an era.
Perhaps one of the best known of the English monarchs, Queen Victoria forever shaped a chapter of English history, bequeathing her name to the Victorian age. In Queen Victoria, Lucy Worsley introduces this iconic woman in a new light. Going beyond an exploration of the queen merely as a monarch, Worsley considers Victoria as a woman leading a truly extraordinary life in a unique time period. The audiobook is structured around the various roles that Victoria inhabited - a daughter raised to wield power, a loving but tempestuous wife, a controlling mother, and a cunning widow - all while wearing the royal crown.
Far from a protofeminist, Queen Victoria was socially conservative and never supported women’s rights. And yet, Victoria thwarted the strict rules of womanhood that defined the era to which she gave her name. She was passionate, selfish, and moody, boldly defying the will of politicians who sought to control her and emotionally controlling her family for decades. How did the woman who defined Victorian womanhood also manage to defy its conventions?
Drawing from the vast collection of Victoria’s correspondence and the rich documentation of her life, Worsley recreates 24 of the most important days in Victoria's life, including her parents' wedding day, the day she met Albert, her own wedding day, the birth of her first child, a Windsor Christmas, the death of Prince Albert, and many more. Each day gives a glimpse into the identity of this powerful, difficult queen as a wife and widow, mother and matriarch, and above all, a woman of her time.

Gloriana!
Scholarly biographies are often so dull and repetitive, perhaps because they must cover an entire life with minute accuracy. And if a biography is not strictly accurate, not underpinned by documents, first sources, etc., one may as well read a novel. Of course, No amount liveliness will make up for shallow research.
Here is where the author's chosen structure is brilliant. Focusing on a few dates not only allows her to show off her scholarly chops, but also to indulge in a bit of "gossip" about her subject, and to put Victoria firnly in context of the age. You're impressed by detail and primary sources, you feel the Queen was a real person, and that you have a rather fuller, more empathetic, understanding of her life. Victoria is not disrespected by assumptions about her thoughts and feelings, nor is she fawned upon, made into a marble statue you come to hate for its perfection.
Much -- plenty!-- is left out, and you will want to say, "Wait, Lucy! Go back. Tell me more about..." and "Do it again, please!" She has gives such a lively grasp of the subject, you will want to fill in gaps, delve deeper, go off on tangents. I know I'm not alone in wanting much more of Melbourne, a man too often seen only in silhouette against much more unworthy subjects --his silly, immature wife; that over-lionized, self-indulgent poet; Peel, Palmerston and other noisy politicians; Albert (now firmly in his place, thank you Lucy); and his pupil, Victoria.
How about it, dear Lucy?

Lucy Worsley peeks into corners that other historians do not see and comes up with wonderful little nuggets and keen perceptions. I'm sorry she did not narrate the book herself as she is delightful, but the narrator did a good job for her.

Bait and switch! Worsley in sample but not book
I love Lucy Worsley and I find her writing and research fun and fascinating and informative. BUT, it's not fair to have her read the sample and someone else narrate the book. Worsley has an extremely identifiable voice and fun emphasis. The narrator was fine - but not Lucy Worsley. So I found in my mind, without trying to I was translating the narrators voice into Lucy Worsley's voice, which made listening much less enjoyable.
The content, as expected was great, and I especially liked the descriptions of Victoria's clothes.

Absolutely Wonderful
I enjoyed and ate up every chapter of this book. I learned so much about Victoria, her family, her challenges and struggles - all making her the woman she was and still is to many admirers.
A bonus was the great interview by Lucy Worsley at the end.
I also found Lucy Paterson’s voice and inflection to be most engaging to listen to!
