Description

From two leaders of the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement, a bold, contrarian guide to retiring at any age, with a reproducible formula to financial independence

A bull***t-free guide to growing your wealth, retiring early, and living life on your own terms

Kristy Shen retired with a million dollars at the age of 31, and she did it without hitting a home run on the stock market, starting the next Snapchat in her garage, or investing in hot real estate. Learn how to cut down on spending without decreasing your quality of life, build a million-dollar portfolio, fortify your investments to survive bear markets and black-swan events, and use the four percent rule and the Yield Shield - so you can quit the rat race forever. Not everyone can become an entrepreneur or a real estate baron; the rest of us need Shen's mathematically proven approach to retire decades before 65.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio. The PDF includes detailed charts, graphs, formulas, illustrated strategies, and the complete appendices from the book, to help reach financial independence and retire early.

loved it!

I found it very relevant and applicable for today's world and realities. I loved all the hesitations she brings up were all my questions as well on how I can retire in my 30s and not go broke. Kristy is a Canadian which I loved - she has examples of investments for both Canadians and Americans which is amazing. I find there isn't enough Canadian content out here in the Audible world. I finished it within days then went straight to Chapter's to buy the hard copy as I couldn't find how to access the downloadable PDFs she refers to in the audio. Despite this, I was happy to purchase the hardcopy book as I want to read it again and take notes!

Great Book on Personal Finance

Having sat on the fence (or, more accurately, well behind the fence) for almost 4 decades of my working life with regard to planning for retirement, I finally ran into friends-of-a-friend who said that the book 'Quit Like A Millionaire' was the best book they had ever read on personal finance. These people were real FIRE devotees, so I went ahead and bought the book - and it lay on the coffee table for well over a month before I finally picked it up.

After a slow start setting the scene on their backgrounds, the book really gets going when the authors start to talk about how they deliberately chose their university courses. After that, the book just has great pieces of content after great pieces of content - it's like a page-turning thriller!

I have literally gone from having no idea as to how I would be able to achieve retirement to having a firm timeline to achieve retirement in 10 years, perhaps less. Unfortunately, as I'm already in my 50s, it's not going to be the RE (retire early) part of FIRE but, hey, at least it's Financial Independence. Before I read this book I thought I'd be working right into my 70s, even 80s (if I lasted that long).

I just wish I'd come across a book like this when I was in my later teens or early 20s - boy, I would have done things so differently!

So, if you're interested in achieving financial independence and retiring early, or at least having the choice to retire early, I highly recommend that you buy this book.

Kristy is quite a storyteller!

"The math won't fail you. Stick to it and be on your way to reproducible wealth creation!" - paraphrasing the author. Personally, I've started following up with other recommended resources and applying them starting from the low hanging fruits.

A Canadian/US guide to retiring early

I agreed with 99% of the information being presented and the 1% was addressed in later chapters. If you're an optimizer/saver or want to learn how to become one, this is a great read. I'll definitely be rereading this book and recommending it to friends.

Already started on our way to Quitting....

Loved listening to this book. Had to also pick up a hard copy for reference and for my wife to read. Kristy's time growing up almost mirrors my wife's upbringing which was very uncanny. The principles in this book along with Kristy's blog was that catalyst to start us on our way from holding money in savings accounts. Can't wait to retire early.

She gives some bad advice.

She lost me when she dedicated a chapter to why home ownership is bad. She breaks down the math and basically says buying a house over a 10 year period is a wash. Any gains made on the sale are essentially eaten up by interest and expenses. I'm not going to dispute that. But what she fails to do is compare that to the cost of renting. $2500 per month for rent over a 10 year period is $300,000 in expense. I'd take a financial wash on my housing over a $300,000 expense in rent.

The wisest, most entertaining money book out there

The author/narrator does a really good job of weaving together her life experiences and limiting beliefs to help explain her very original approach to money. I can't imagine reading such a personal and inspiring book without being able to also hear the wonderfully authentic narration by the author herself. I love the way she shared her lightbulb moments and personal choices which finally allowed her to Quit Like a Millionaire. I also enjoyed the forward by JL Collins. And most of all, I love Kristy’s completely blunt and honest approach to money and her way of showing what it looks like to take control and choose your own financial direction. If you want a roadmap to FIRE this is it. I'm recommending this book to everyone I know who cares about money and personal finance. I love this book!

Comprehensive Guide

This is an awesome book that gives a real step by step way to follow her journey to a millionaire. I’m also going to buy the paperback because some of the concepts are a bit too complex to understand in the audio version. Also Kristy is a great book narrator and read the material in an engaging and easily digestible way. Must listen/read for anyone looking to get their time back with Financial Independence.

More like a memoir than a guide

I kept waiting for solid info but the author only talks about herself. Very boring and I gave up half way through. Don’t waste your money on this book.

Less a FIRE book and more a personal journey

Its less a FIRE book and more a personal journey and relies heavily on travel to save money, which is not to my taste and smacks of colonialism. I didn't see anything wrong with the advice, but JL Collins's book The Simple Path to Wealth, plus Mr Money Mustache's page The Shockingly Simple Math Behind Early Retirement plus the book Random Walk Down Wall Street are all you really need.

She just is a little self-centered for my taste, but it's a good book to introduce people to FIRE, but it's a bit much. I've been researching FIRE topics on and off for years (mainly investing), so I'm not as much the audience.

She just feels a little young to me, and I say that as a fellow millennial.

All you really need to know about FIRE is:
1. Your savings rate determined
2. Asset allocation is critical, your balance between bonds and stocks.
3. See #1 and see #2, until you get close to your FIRE number.
4. For your FIRE number take your average annual spending and multiply by 25. Unless you want to work part time during retirement, then halve your average annual spending (assuming you'll make half what you normally do working part time) and multiply that by 25. See also: sideFIRE or Barista FIRE.

As for the people saying only DINKS can do this, you're wrong, but having kids will set your fire goals back significantly.

Early Retirement doesn't have to be when you're in your 30s. I wish I could do it now that I'm in MY 30s, but there's nothing wrong with 40s or 50s; it's all about what is best for you, what kind of lifestyle you want after retirement, etc.

Really could have been cut in half; knowing her background doesn't provide anything beneficial for learning how to retire early.
