Description

“How many women cry when angry because we've held it in for so long? How many discover that anger turned inward is depression? Soraya Chemaly’s Rage Becomes Her will be good for women, and for the future of this country. After all, women have a lot to be angry about.” (Gloria Steinem)

A transformative audiobook urging 21st-century women to embrace their anger and harness it as a tool for lasting personal and societal change.

Women are angry, and it isn’t hard to figure out why.

We are underpaid and overworked. Too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Too dowdy or too made-up. Too big or too thin. Sluts or prudes. We are harassed, told we are asking for it, and asked if it would kill us to smile. Yes, yes it would.

Contrary to the rhetoric of popular “self-help” and an entire lifetime of being told otherwise, our rage is one of the most important resources we have, our sharpest tool against both personal and political oppression. We’ve been told for so long to bottle up our anger, letting it corrode our bodies and minds in ways we don’t even realize. Yet our anger is a vital instrument, our radar for injustice and a catalyst for change. On the flip side, the societal and cultural belittlement of our anger is a cunning way of limiting and controlling our power.

We are so often told to resist our rage or punished for justifiably expressing it, yet how many remarkable achievements in this world would never have gotten off the ground without the kernel of anger that fueled them? Rage Becomes Her makes the case that anger is not what gets in our way, it is our way, sparking a new understanding of one of our core emotions that will give women a liberating sense of why their anger matters and connect them to an entire universe of women no longer interested in making nice at all costs.

Following in the footsteps of classic feminist manifestos like The Feminine Mystique and Our Bodies, Ourselves, Rage Becomes Her is an eye-opening audiobook for the 21st-century woman: an engaging, accessible credo offering us the tools to re-understand our anger and harness its power to create lasting positive change.

Embracing rage yes, but no transformation.

The author works to highlight a key cause for woman's rage in modern day; however, appears to overlook ' why ' social systems and differences in gender may have surfaced in the first place. This essential piece of information can transform anger into compassion. Compassion has an ability to set very bold boundaries. But it's done with heart; while respecting the other with dignity rather than an object to be overpowered. Instead of coming from place of understanding, the author appears hostile, intolerant and blaming (towards white men in particular), but anything that represents traditional ideologies and mindsets. It does not appear to me that she has worked through her rage in a meaningful way, and instead uses "justified aggression" to force others towards change. I had to stop listening after the second chapter. The rest might be good, but unfortunately I couldn't get there as I don't think this book is for me.

Everyone should read this

When I was a young woman, I said I believed in equality. However, I struggled with two things: the first was being in Protestant/evangelical Christianity and the second was unconsciously buying into the lie that "masculine" (whatever that is) was superior. I wanted to be perfect, which to me meant simultaneously allowing someone else (a man) to make decisions for me, a la Christian teachings, but also being strong and independent myself--like a man.

Now that I'm in my 40s, I realize that this was a fool's errand. Nothing I could have done would have made me into society's view of a perfect woman, because my own pesky nature wouldn't allow it. For years, I turned my rage inward, and what I got to show for it was burnout, a divorce, and breast cancer.

Now I'm learning to be myself, while reaffirming all the things I'd been too afraid to admit were true along the way. If you like facts (like I used to think "the proper man" or "logical, emotionless woman" should), then you'll love this book. It's jam-packed with all the research, case studies, and anecdotes you could want, proving that women are indeed still treated as second-class citizens and held to different standards than men.

I hope it makes you furious.

Fantastic

If you are a woman you should read this but if you are a man even more so. This book will enlighten you why women become “angry” and irrational. Or are we? This will bring to light all that a privileged men never think of but we as women have to put up with on regular basis. Excellent read.
