Description

The complete collection of landmark BBC Radio dramas of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe mysteries.

Philip Marlowe is the archetypal noir detective: wisecracking and world weary, hard boiled yet honourable. This volume includes all eight dramatisations of Raymond Chandler's groundbreaking crime novels featuring his iconic hero.

The Big Sleep: Marlowe is consulted by a wealthy family man with two big problems: his children.

Farewell My Lovely: Marlowe's search for an ex-con's ex-girlfriend leads him into danger.

The High Window: when a rare gold coin is stolen from her collection, Mrs Murdoch hires Philip Marlowe to find it.

The Lady in the Lake: businessman Derace Kingsley hires Marlowe to find his estranged wife, Crystal.

The Little Sister: commissioned to find Orfamay Quest's missing brother, Marlowe is drawn into the glamorous film world of Hollywood.

The Long Goodbye: Marlowe befriends a drunk named Terry Lennox but comes to regret doing him a favour.

Playback: hired to follow the mysterious Betty Mayfield, Marlowe soon finds that he is being tailed, too.

Poodle Springs: newly married Marlowe puts his bride aside to look for a gambler on the run.

Starring Toby Stephens as Philip Marlowe, these stylish, suspenseful dramatisations - full of witty, ironic dialogue and colourful characters - bring the beautiful, corrupt world of California in the '40s and '50s to luminous life.

Duration: 11 hours approx.

Stellar Philip Marlowe Dramatisations!

This BBC production of all of Chandler's eight Philip Marlowe novels is absolutely stellar! The source material is classic and very well adapted into roughly eight 80-minute dramatizations. All of Chandler's clever and crisp dialogue leaps out into your ears. Toby Stephens now ranks as my favorite Philip Marlowe, right behind Elliott Gould who portrayed the private investigator in Robert Altman's 1973 film adaptation of "The Long Goodbye". Gould has also done the narration for most (if not all) of the Marlowe audiobooks at one point. The legendary Humphrey Bogart also did a splendid job of portraying Marlowe on the screen in Howard Hawks' 1946 film adaptation of "The Big Sleep". But I gotta say, Toby Stephens does a spot on job of bringing the sleuth to life. The supporting cast, sound effects, Jazz music and overall direction is nothing short of amazing. I breezed through this collection and will be revisiting it often. Highly recommended if you're a fan of Chandler's books, mysteries, private eye stories, or Film Noir.

Stephens Is Masterful!

I was assigned “The Big Sleep” as a reading assignment in university and purchased the dramatized version through Apple Music as I did not have time to read the full novel. From the very opening of the book, I was hooked!

This repertoire company of actors expertly portray the characters in a completely authentic way.

Each novel is so well delivered! They are radio dramas, so they cut through much of the unnecessary detail found in the printed versions of these books, leaving you something that is very entertaining and digestible in an hour to an hour and a half.

Toby Steven’s portrayal of Phillip Marlowe is reminiscent of actor Stacy Keach’s TV portrayal of another hard boiled detective: Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer. While many pretentious people out there would view this as something negative, I absolutely love it as watching Mike Hammer reruns was a favourite activity for my father and I.

While others have portrayed Marlowe in the past, Humphrey Bogart and Elliott Gould being the two best known (Gould even narrated several audiobook version of Chandler’s novels), for me, Toby Stephens is the definitive Phillip Marlowe.

Great Mysteries

I loved each story, and felt the voice acting was spot on! I found this to be an enjoyable way to pass the time, and I loved the way the stories unfolded!
