Histoire
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

One starship will either save Earth or destroy her. A century ago our star erupted, destroying Earth's wormhole network and closing off trade with her colonized planets. Histoire
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Histoire
Aliens exist...and, as it turns out, most of them aren’t that friendly. Jacob Brown wasn’t even born yet the first time they attacked Earth. He was only 14 the second time it happened. When Earth finally came together and fielded its first spaceborne military, Jacob didn’t hesitate to volunteer. Serving aboard a mighty starship, he’d be able to defend his planet - and his family - when, inevitably, they came again.

Description
They hunt us. They bomb our worlds for target practice.
A star cluster in the constellation of Orion rotates once every 1,000 years. Those who rule there have an ancient tradition: When each cycle ends, they train their fleets by spilling the blood of lesser beings.
The enemy fleets are coming again. In response, the Rebel Worlds gather their starships to face the terrifying threat, and this time humanity is asked to stand with them.
The last time they considered Earth, Vikings in longboats were raiding English coastlines. Today, we're less primitive. Today, we're a target.
One man is chosen to command Earth's single ship in the Rebel Fleet. When the war breaks out, Leo Blake must win it...or die trying.
"Classic B. V. Larson. This book grabs you by the plasma cannon and won't let go. Fast adventure, fast action - and I loved the space-battles!" - S. Arthur

Good read
This is a new genre for me. The very beginning
was weird and violent but once Blake gets into space it’s a fun ride. I loved the irreverence of Blake and his relationships with other crews. I was a little worried the military space battle would bore me but I actually enjoyed the maneuvering—not a lot of geeky terms for weapons/ships or battle moves. No problem following the action. I’m on to book 2.

Good enough for a first book
I enjoyed this book which is pretty similar to other works by BV Larson, though I was quite disappointed by how the main character handled certain situations, as I saw many much better paths the story could have taken had the main character been as smart and “cunning” as the author was insisting. There were also more then a few inconsistencies, though I have hope that this story grows into a decent series as I will continue it.

Solid scofi with logical possibilities
this was enjoying tale, with interesting characters and unpredictable developments. it was nice to see the ending beyond the ending to give us a clear idea of where the story could go, without leaving us hanging.

Good but familiar
Really enjoyed the narration of this title, but the story felt familiar; think “Enders Game”. Still, an interesting story and worth a listen.

Great start to a series
There are mixed reviews on this author and this series, some say they love it some say they hate it, others say he rewrites new series based on his past series, all points of views are true to some extent.
Likes:
- BV is highly skilled at world building, and is great with story pacing, he switches between persons views quite good without overusing any persons point of view.
- I do like his MC’s attitude and humour
- Hes not afraid to include sex in his books, which in my opinion should not hidden in the closet so to speak, its a natural part of life and should be celebrated
- Very good plot and delivery
- Good narration
- Great character casting
- Love the underdog feeling
Yes this series does have some similarities to undying, Aliens/space/win against an ultimate enemy/a small group of people overcoming overwhelming odds. Look this series is a completely different story then undying, come to think of it, most scifi books ive read by different authors generally include Aliens/war/a MC and his sidekicks/unbeatable odds/etc.....
I highly recommend this series, if you like BV then you wont regret getting into this series

Big Ol' Nope
This was just really not good. I wish I could give it 0 stars. I got this as an Audible Daily Deal and honestly it just reminds me that sometimes those are misses. This had absolutely no redeeming qualities and made me want to stop listening about 100 times but I felt like I had gone too far in the audiobook to stop. Plus, after our main character had sex with a humanoid-cat-alien, I just had to know what that would lead to (more sex). Definitely think this is a pass, my friends.

Decent start to the series
Aliens who are on the side of the "rebels" come to Earth, capture people, and press them into service in their war against the "Imperium" . They are given symbiotic organisms so they can operate technology and understand each other. The rebels are disjointed and out for themselves, the Imperium doesn't consider them a threat and kills them for sport.
Overall the writing is fairly simplistic. The characters start off as quite two dimensional but other than the main character, they all start to develop their own idiosyncrasies which moves the plot forward. I was worried when I started that it was going to be boring as their is no nuance to the writing and very little to the characters but I found myself getting engaged in the story.
The narrator is ok, but sounds too much like he should be narrating 50's crime novels. But it is passable.
I am worried that the secret plot device that changes the tide is going to become god like later in the series, but I guess I will have to see. I will get the next in the series.
