Description

They hunt us. They bomb our worlds for target practice.

A star cluster in the constellation of Orion rotates once every 1,000 years. Those who rule there have an ancient tradition: When each cycle ends, they train their fleets by spilling the blood of lesser beings.

The enemy fleets are coming again. In response, the Rebel Worlds gather their starships to face the terrifying threat, and this time humanity is asked to stand with them.

The last time they considered Earth, Vikings in longboats were raiding English coastlines. Today, we're less primitive. Today, we're a target.

One man is chosen to command Earth's single ship in the Rebel Fleet. When the war breaks out, Leo Blake must win it...or die trying.

"Classic B. V. Larson. This book grabs you by the plasma cannon and won't let go. Fast adventure, fast action - and I loved the space-battles!" - S. Arthur

I’ve heard it before

It’s a retelling of Swarm, with new characters. It’s still a good book but I’m not sure if I’ll buy the next book in the series.

Good read

This is a new genre for me. The very beginning
was weird and violent but once Blake gets into space it’s a fun ride. I loved the irreverence of Blake and his relationships with other crews. I was a little worried the military space battle would bore me but I actually enjoyed the maneuvering—not a lot of geeky terms for weapons/ships or battle moves. No problem following the action. I’m on to book 2.

Formulaic but entertaining

Most of the books that I've read or listened to, by BV Larson, have the same characters reworked and tweaked along with very similar plot lines. This book was no different and some of the content was absolutely ludicrous. That said I really enjoyed it. It's fun and I think it's meant to be fun.

The narrator move things along well and it was quite easy to discern between the different characters voices.

So if you're looking for an action oriented pulpy science-fiction spin... without much need for deep thought, I recommend this book. If you want serious science fiction or something a little deeper in terms of space opera, you might look elsewhere. However , I'm hoping for more in the series.

Undying Mercenaries

I loved BV's first series, it was wonderful. when he released the undying mercenaries series, that quickly became one of my all time favorites. this new series is excellent and is very similar to undying. it seems like a mix between star force and undying.

Swarm series all over again

Larson is getting in abut by of a rut. He excels at world building but the overall premise is just too similar. Aliens enlisting us to fight their war is the central theme of two other series that I know of that he has written. The book was entertaining but I couldn't shake the feeling I had been here before.
Side note: he has utterly no depth to female characters. They only want to be arm candy for some overly testosterone juiced protagonist. It gets tiresome.

B. V. Larson didn't seem to put as much effort into this one.

If this is your first book from B. V. Larson I recommend you check out a different one. This one was not as intriguing and the story line was simpler.

Amateur hour

This book reads like it was written by a 17 year old. Now, to be sure, I wasn't expecting high literature here, but this is significantly weaker than what I'm used to in mindless sci-fi. Poor writing, naive plotline, no character development to speak of. I'm done with this author.

A book in a series that could stand on its own!

Often I read books in a series that just stop. Then you wait for the next book and if you are lucky, you will remember the characters and plot from the previous book. B.V. Larson wrote this book and it would stand on its own -- and still leave room for more. I enjoyed the characters and the world created for the story to move through.

It is a fun book as the main character has to learn how to live in several different environments and with different protocols. Warning: This book is PG-13 or a bit higher and may not be the best for kids. But I am no kid and I loved the book. I believe I will buy the next one in the series.

Incompetence

I enjoyed B. V Larson's undying mercenaries series because the military incompetence is actually kind of funny, but this series was almost as bad. The only thing that made it somewhat believable was that the MC is an officer.... If you are looking for a more serious sci find I would not recommend this series

Somewhat entertaining but ... corny

It plays a bit like a cartoon for adults. The pacing is pretty rushed, especially considering the scale of the story he's telling. The main character is endowed with inexplicably extraordinary abilities but is otherwise as bland as under-seasoned mashed potatoes.
It's imaginative and even exciting at moments but, for the most part, lackluster and not compelling. Decent for a quick read (maybe a round trip flight?) but nothing you'd recommend to a friend.

Very unique in its take on "alien invasion"

Well written, performance was great, and the uniqueness makes me wanna grab the next book in the series. Worth the read for any Scifi fan.

Worth the read, but not great

I like multiple book series, and this is a four book series. I think it got weaker as it went on, though. This was probably the best of the series. The lead character is the stereotypical smart clever womanizer who is misunderstood, always in trouble, but just manages to get out of it in the end. Stereotypical, but enjoyable.
