In business, the right behaviors matter. But getting it right is tricky. Even when we acknowledge the need to change what we do and how we do it, life has a habit of getting in the way, upsetting even the best-laid plans. And just how do we manage those situations that can provoke even the most rational among us into behaving in ways we would rather forget?

Why do we so often seek out physical pain and emotional turmoil? We go to movies that make us cry, or scream, or gag. We poke at sores, eat spicy foods, immerse ourselves in hot baths, run marathons. Some of us even seek out pain and humiliation in sexual role-play. Where do these seemingly perverse appetites come from? Drawing on groundbreaking findings from psychology and brain science, The Sweet Spot shows how the right kind of suffering sets the stage for enhanced pleasure.

In The Spark Factor, Dr. Molly Maloof shares a program uniquely tailored to the biology of women—a plan that targets the mitochondria, the power source of the cells. As Dr. Maloof shows, the intense, all-or-nothing approaches commonly used by biohackers to optimize health—including sustained fasting, ultra-low-carb diets, and intense training—can be harmful, especially for women, because they create excessive stress in an already-stressed body, which can make us tired, weak, and prone to illness.

Description
A peak-performance expert maps out a revolutionary new practice - hedonic engineering - that combines the best of neuroscience and optimal psychology. It’s an intensive program of breathing, movement, and sexuality that mends trauma, heightens inspiration, and tightens connections - helping us wake up, grow up, and show up for a world that needs us all.
This is a book about a big idea. And the idea is this: Slowly over the past few decades, and now suddenly, all at once, we’re suffering from a collapse in meaning. Fundamentalism and nihilism are filling that vacuum, with consequences that affect us all. In a world that needs us at our best, diseases of despair, tribalism, and disaster fatigue are leaving us at our worst.
It’s vital that we regain control of the stories we’re telling because they are shaping the future we’re creating. To do that, we have to remember our deepest inspiration, heal our pain and apathy, and connect to each other like never before. If we can do that, we’ve got a shot at solving the big problems we face. And if we can’t? Well, the dustbin of history has swallowed civilizations older and fancier than ours.
This book is divided into three parts. The first, Choose Your Own Apocalypse, takes a look at our current meaning crisis - where we are today, why it’s so hard to make sense of the world, what might be coming next, and what to do about it. It also makes a case that many of our efforts to cope, whether anxiety and denial, or tribalism and identity politics, are likely making things worse.
The middle section, The Alchemist Cookbook, applies the creative firm IDEO’s design thinking to the meaning crisis. This is where the book gets hands on - taking a look at the strongest evolutionary drivers that can bring about inspiration, healing, and connection. From breathing, to movement, sexuality, music, and substances - these are the everyday tools to help us wake up, grow up, and show up. AKA - how to blow yourself sky high with household materials. And the best part? They’re accessible, by anyone anywhere, no middleman required. Transcendence democratized.
The final third of the book, Ethical Cult Building, focuses on the tricky nature of putting these kinds of experiences into gear and into culture - because, anytime in the past when we’ve figured out combinations of peak states and deep healing, we’ve almost always ended up with problematic culty communities. Playing with fire has left a lot of people burned. This section lays out a road map for sparking a thousand fires around the world - each one unique and tailored to the needs and values of its participants. Think of it as an open-source toolkit for building ethical culture.
In Recapture the Rapture, we’re taking radical research out of the extremes and applying it to the mainstream - to the broader social problem of healing, believing, and belonging. It’s providing answers to the questions we face: how to replace blind faith with direct experience, how to move from broken to whole, and how to cure isolation with connection. Said even more plainly, it shows us how to revitalize our bodies, boost our creativity, rekindle our relationships, and answer once and for all the questions of why we are here and what do we do know?
In a world that needs the best of us from the rest of us, this is a book that shows us how to get it done.

Uniquely Cliché Cult Building
Humbly arrogant, selectively well researched, coyly ourlandish, and politely insulting & dismissive of ALL wordviews - cultural, spiritual & scientific.
It started well, sounding as detached, yet as captivating as a documentary. By the end it was exhausting to hear another line of what turned out to be little more than another covertly narcissistic sell on a brand new old salvation. Provided, a much sexyer one - the spiritual cult of sex, drugs, & rock'n'roll.
Plain translation: "I am discussing & associating myself with these brilliant minds and philosophies hoping you lost souls include me among them. Sure, kiddos, they are all venerable, valuable, and wonderful, and they all served some purpose at one time.. given we were so poorly evolved. But sadly, all these worldviews or luminaries, from across time and place, are just so disappointing.. I had to step in. Benevolently and disinterestedly, of course.
Oh no, I don't propose I be your new god.. that would be too obvious. In stead, let's co-opt your most basic and natural drives and desires as sacraments - or at least the sexy ones - then I will teach you how to worship yourself.. since I already know something about that. You be your own god. And I'll be the last prophet of biohacked old hedonism. Unless you're some old puritan prude and decide not to join in.
The last prophet indeed. After all, this universalist animalistic rapture, this way, this time, is the one to finally combine and topple everything that ever came before and bring it all together in one i-religion. And all for team humanity, of course - pinky swear. "
Gets points for exquisite writing talent. So witty and creative, great personality and tact, and an ability to flow, captivate, and inspire. Also a few bits of intriguing research, and even some new ideas I will definitely try.
Look, IMO it would have been a stellar book if it weren't for what sort of feels like delusions of grandeur. I am pretty pissed he didn't leave that out, and just ADD to knowledge & new perspective and leave it there.

A refreshing optimistic reframe of reality
Jamie Wheal does a great job of outlining a potential model for navigating conciousness in our strange times. His carefully laid out scientifically backed strategies leave the power in the hands of the reader to amalgamate the tools provided on their own, for what works specifically for them. He's careful to explain the reason for his choices and does a good job to never demonize ones that seem "far out" or have been demonized in the past. Over all, great and useful information, packaged in a engaging and interesting read (or listen in this case).

A staggeringly vast and impeccably written book
The breadth and depth of this book is remarkable! It brought together so many tremendous concepts that are essential for realigning our human experience with the ineffable consciousness that created this experience.
I know I will return to this book again and again.
I always appreciate hearing an author read their own words. There is an authentic powerful energy behind everything conveyed in this recording.

Author bias negatively impacts delivery
I wanted to like this. I am forcing myself to finish when I am in the right state of mind, because I am aware there is interesting knowledge buried in this book.
I didn't find any inspiration. There also appears to be some hypocrisy at work here. Disappointed.

Recapturing Me
My wife left me four days before COVID was officially announced. It took me months before I believed I hadn’t entered a parallel world. Jamie Wheal’s Recapture the Rapture is the first book I’ve been able to read in over a year. Everything else rang false or measured untrue. Jamie has integrated approaches to understanding our world I had previously seen as separate. And I consider myself holistic! This book is a reminder to show up again for a life you haven’t lost yet!

An over educated man with a problem
I gave up continuing with the book although I skimmed towards the end after he gave a pornographic graphic description of a Muslim warlord doping his followers and having courtesans sexually stimulate them. Beyond creepy. Don’t know what the point was here. Left me with the feeling that an over educated man, but emotional crippled, can be a very dangerous thing when writing a book on recapture the Rapture especially when he Admits that he can’t relate to the transcendence of Buddha and the Taoists.

Amazing insights, lacking examples
Overall this was a really great book with some awesome insights, However I feel like it was lacking in physical world examples and leaned heavily on metaphors.
But maybe that was more of the point of it anyway and it’s probably worth listening to again because there’s really a lot packed into it. Enjoyable enough that I would consider it again and recommend it.

solid meh
perhaps worth a read. listened to the audible. lots of metaphor. so much you will say "ah, yes, I get it" followed with another thing that you are supposed to feel the same about, but it's not necessarily true... the statement made. from nitrogen to BDSM, I'm not sure this was the book I thought it was going to be. I would title it, "friendly lectures of the outdoor coffeeshop smoke sesh from a person who knows a few interesting things, kindof." the thank you section at the end does wrap it up nicely. though my words are slightly harsh, what's true is this person wrote a book... that is not an easy thing to do. reading this book is better than scrolling through your social media, by far.

This owner’s manual for the human spirit arrives with impeccable timing
Jamie Wheal has written the soulful, insightful, and actionable book that our world so needs in this specific moment. Rich with mind blowing information, heart melting sensitivity and galvanizing purpose, Recapture The Rapture takes a sweeping inventory of the current state of the world and provides with brilliant guidance a plan of action. This book is a defibrillator for the dysfunction of the human heart and our ailing world.

A thought provoking read. Belief sculpting.
This is an amazing book that points in the direction of where humanity needs to be heading. For all the religious folks out there it’s a must read, but be ready to have your beliefs challenged. I believe this book will show anyone how to get closer to their gods than any preacher could. The only thing I believe this book could and probably should’ve included more of is the issues surrounding indigenous sovereignty especially in the America’s. It seems like this topic never gets brought up and I do not believe humanity can fully heal until we understand and integrate their pain fully into our culture. Regardless, I highly recommend and I hope everyone alive and breathing will reads this.

Captivating and inspiring
Wheal makes a compelling case for living a life that is far more than just status quo, that it is our duty.

An Intellectual Playground for the Human Spirit
A titillating and optimistic exploration of the human condition. Exploding with substance.
Masterfully narrated.
This book could be particularly helpful for one caught in the struggle between the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment while managing a mundane human life.
Loved It! I think I’ll will immediately give it a second listen.

Awesome Message
Wow, Jamie nails a humanist version of what I know to be the essence of Christian Universalism, the prevailing belief system of the first 500 years of Christianity, now all but completely buried by man’s lust for power. Thank you Jamie for sharing your wisdom!

This was awesome. Wonderful read.
Great work fleshing out a narrative for now and the future. I remember reading Huxley’s Island years ago, and realizing that there could be a better “more human” way to operate as a society, if we had a framework that made sense, to believe into. This book puts a lot of meat on the spiritual & physiological part of that skeleton. I love that the framework works w existing religions. Beautifully done.

Shared wisdom.
Take it in deeply, more than once. We’re here to evolve and awaken, not to win the monopoly game.
