Just one glance at the title should let you know that this isn't going to be very good... But every once in a while you find a book you shouldn't judge by its cover.

the story is framed as entries in a diary by a very enthusiastic girl stuck as an NPC shopkeep in a dungeon with her friends (who are also stuck running shops) talking about the secret lives they built for themselves when the players aren't around.

The framing as a series of diary entries is PERFECT for an audiobook because you don't get the little hiccups of the original text specifying who's talking, you just get one character enthusiastically telling her diary about her life.

Now, none of this would work if the main character, Nikki, wasn't so wonderfully charming the whole time (but she is) and it wouldn't work if Reba Buhr didn't do such an INCREDIBLE job bringing the character to life with every line (but she did)... Meaning this ends up as an absolutely wonderful audiobook that I can wholeheartedly recommend!

Firstly, at first the performance seems average but then you realize that’s because the narrator is just that good at TRYING to be a normal girl. After a whole listen she’s actually quite skilled. As for the story, it’s amusing and better than it would otherwise seem at a glance. If you are familiar with Japanese light novels or the anime’s based off of them, this is sorta on that vein. I enjoyed it, but if you’re looking for something complex and compelling, this might not be the right time for you to indulge in this book. 📕
