For those wondering if the series is worth finishing after the bleak second book, this one certainly redeems the series, despite the seemingly impossibility of a positive ending, it does get better! And Hobbs rich story telling prevails

This book has elements that I thought I would like, fantasy, magic, strong characters and an unusual story. But I didn't care for it. The story is told in the first person so often you get his perceptions but not necessarily the truth which is revealed later. That part was ok. There were some sections I liked better than others.
Robin Hobbs is a good writer, I have really enjoyed other series but this one not so much. Over the three books, it takes a long time to figure out what is going on, at least it did for me. I didn't much care for all the fat person parts although her description of the cruelty and prejudice from people was spot on. It took until the last book to understand it. I am sure there are people who will like this story but not me. On a positive note, I thought the narrator did a good job.

if you felt like the first 2 books were kinda repetitive and, frankly, a bit boring, don't even start this one. I wish I had jumped shop after the first book, but I didn't, and that is some prime listening time I can't get back. I usually really enjoy Robin's books, but this series just didn't do it for me. ymmv
