Call it "Zen and the Art of Farming" or a "Little Green Book", Masanobu Fukuoka's manifesto about farming, eating, and the limits of human knowledge presents a radical challenge to the global systems we rely on for our food. At the same time, it is a spiritual memoir of a man whose innovative system of cultivating the earth reflects a deep faith in the wholeness and balance of the natural world. As Wendell Berry writes in his preface, the book "is valuable to us because it is at once practical and philosophical."

The problem of agriculture is as old as civilization. Throughout history, great societies that abused their land withered into poverty or disappeared entirely. Now we risk repeating this ancient story on a global scale due to ongoing soil degradation, a changing climate, and a rising population. But there is reason for hope. David R. Montgomery introduces us to farmers around the world at the heart of a brewing soil health revolution that could bring humanity's ailing soil back to life remarkably fast.

Fossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem; it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels.

Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

To grow produce of the highest nutritional quality the essential minerals lacking in our soil must be replaced, but this re-mineralization calls for far more attention to detail than the simple addition of composted manure or NPK fertilizers. The Intelligent Gardener demystifies the process, while simultaneously debunking much of the false and misleading information perpetuated by both the conventional and organic agricultural movements. In doing so, it conclusively establishes the link between healthy soil, healthy food, and healthy people.

For decades, it has been nearly universal dogma among environmentalists and health advocates that cattle and beef are public enemy number one. But is the matter really so clear? Hardly, argues environmental lawyer turned rancher Nicolette Hahn Niman in her new book, Defending Beef. The public has long been led to believe that livestock, especially cattle, erode soils, pollute air and water, damage riparian areas, and decimate wildlife populations. In Defending Beef, Hahn Niman argues that cattle are not inherently bad for either the Earth or our own nutritional health.

Teaming with Microbes offers an alternative to this vicious circle and details how to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web. You’ll discover that healthy soil is teeming with life - not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.

By explaining the lean system for identifying and eliminating waste and introducing efficiency in every aspect of the farm operation, The Lean Farm makes the case that small-scale farming can be an attractive career option for young people who are interested in growing food for their community. Working smarter, not harder, also prevents the kind of burnout that start-up farmers often encounter in the face of long, hard, backbreaking labor. Lean principles grew out of the Japanese automotive industry, but they are now being followed by progressive farms around the world....

When Rudolf Steiner gave these lectures 80 years ago, industrial farming was on the rise and organic methods were being replaced in the name of science, efficiency, and technology. With the widespread alarm over the quality of food in recent years, and the growth of the organic movement and its mainstream acceptance, perceptions are changing. The qualitative aspect of food is once again on the agenda, and in this context Rudolf Steiner's only course of lectures on agriculture is critical to the current debate.

Description
Restoration Agriculture reveals how to sustainably grow perennial food crops that can feed us in our resource-compromised future.
The restoration agriculture system described in this award-winning book works! It is possible for humans to produce staple foods using perennial agricultural ecosystems that actually improve the quality of the environment. This can be done on a backyard, farm, or ranch scale and is needed right now - on a global scale.
Restoration Agriculture explains how we can have all of the benefits of natural, perennial ecosystems and create agricultural systems that imitate nature in form and function while still providing for our food, building, fuel, and many other needs. Using the restoration agriculture system, an oak savanna mimic will produce more than twice the number of edible human calories per acre as an average acre of corn, never needs to be planted again, prevents erosion, creates oil, and can be managed with no fossil fuel inputs. This book, based on real-world practices, presents an alternative to the agriculture system of eradication and offers exciting hope for our future.

identifying problems but misidentifying causes
the author gets so close to the heart of the problem but just misses the target. much the same for a few of his solutions.
he identifies financial profit as being necessary to success but also seems to blame the greedy profit driven corporations to be responsible for the problems in big agro. but as he also seems to realize, it isn't the profit incentives, it's the subsidies. a corporation is harmless without government support. markets will destroy any corporation that isn't 'restorative' unless a government is there to prop them up and bail them out.
government is the enemy of sustainability and the future of restoration agriculture.
and those who wish to thrive in restorative ways must be so efficient as to out compete big agro even with their various hand outs and monopoly generating regulations. the solution is not to convince governments to embrace permaculture, this will only destroy it just as makes the author's bees and trees etc weak to spray them with chemicals and various inputs. to save agriculture and the world government and it's cronies must be out competed, defeated and otherwise made obsolete.

Very interesting, informative, and inspiring. Everyone should read about the benefits of permaculture and food forestry. Excellent "why" book, and good clear "how" as well
I recently made the decision to restore my small farm to forest, regardless of whether it made money. The forest needed to return. My husband was wafflingly supportive. Then I found this book, and was able to envision a way to have a forest that was profitable. This book is excellent for folks with farmland who want to find a better way. (It is probably great for other folks too... I can only vouch for me as a farmland owner.)
As a former commercial beekeeper, I can tell you that he is only sort of accurate about bees and beekeeping, but I have talked to beekeepers who are more inaccurate. It's hard to get bees right.
Also as a former commercial beekeeper, I was thrilled to hear Shepard speak honestly about the near impossibility of earning 100% of one's income from the farm. You should plan to be profitable, but you'll probably need a side hustle. Every aspiring farmer needs to hear that, as well as every struggling farmer. My husband is feeling much better about restoring our forest, now that he understands how that restoration can provide some profit. When I found a patch of wild hazelnuts on the property and explained how Shepard grows hazelnuts, he even got excited. Him: "And whatever else happens, we'll never starve!" This book is not a blueprint, it's a vision. Catch the vision and translate it onto your own property in your own style with your own resources and priorities. You'll never starve.
