Histoire
Social scientist Brené Brown has ignited a global conversation on courage, vulnerability, shame, and worthiness. Her pioneering work uncovered a profound truth: Vulnerability - the willingness to show up and be seen with no guarantee of outcome - is the only path to more love, belonging, creativity, and joy. But living a brave life is not always easy: We are, inevitably, going to stumble and fall. It is the rise from falling that Brown takes as her subject in Rising Strong.

What does it take to be secure in our sense of belonging and self-worth? We may hustle to attain this security through achievements, meeting expectations, or repeating affirmations to ourselves - but Dr. Brené Brown's research has shown there is ultimately one obstacle to our sense of worthiness. “Shame is the barrier,” she teaches, “and building shame resilience is how we overcome it.”

Jack Valentine seemed to have it all. He made good money as an ad man and looked good doing it. He had a hot apartment, cool friends, even a slick car - at least until the hectic Monday morning a truck smashed into it, sending the critically injured Jack to the hospital. Everything happens for a reason, though, and Jack’s reason reveals itself in the silver-haired cancer patient who becomes his roommate one evening. The elderly man, Cal, shares his life story - one not dissimilar to Jack’s - of material wealth masking a gaping hole within.

Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity.

The guests range from super celebs (Jamie Foxx, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc.) and athletes (icons of powerlifting, gymnastics, surfing, etc.) to legendary Special Operations commanders and black-market biochemists. For most of my guests, it’s the first time they’ve agreed to a two-to-three-hour interview.

Like thousands of Aboriginal children in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere in the colonized world, Xatsu'll chief Bev Sellars spent part of her childhood as a student in a church-run residential school. These institutions endeavored to "civilize" Native children through Christian teachings; forced separation from family, language, and culture; and strict discipline. In this frank and poignant memoir of her years at St. Joseph's Mission, Sellars breaks her silence about the residential school's lasting effects on her and her family and eloquently articulates her own path to healing.

A year and a half into our marriage, I found out my husband had been having an affair with a 19-year-old for six months. I filed for divorce and left. Two weeks later I met a man, and we fell madly in love. It was a fairy-tale romance for a month and a half, and he convinced me to join him on a romantic month-long vacation in Italy. Forty-eight hours before we were supposed to get on a plane, he told me he needed to go by himself. I was devastated. So, I had a decision to make. Either stay home and be heartbroken, or go travel Europe for a month by myself.

The Inconvenient Indian is at once a “history” and the complete subversion of a history - in short, a critical and personal meditation that the remarkable Thomas King has conducted over the past 50 years about what it means to be “Indian” in North America. Rich with dark and light, pain and magic, this book distills the insights gleaned from that meditation, weaving the curiously circular tale of the relationship between non-Natives and Natives in the centuries since the two first encountered each other.

Description
With her previous best sellers, Dr. Brené Brown helped us realize that vulnerability is the birthplace for trust, belonging, joy, creativity, and love. Yet a willingness to be vulnerable means accepting that life will sometimes knock us down. Where do we find the strength to get back up? In her research for her breakthrough book Rising Strong, Brené discovered a key factor. "Without exception," she says, "the concept of spirituality emerged from the data as a critical component of overcoming struggle."
In Rising Strong as a Spiritual Practice, Brené offers an in-depth exploration of this critical and oft-misunderstood aspect of wholehearted living. Here she defines spirituality as something not reliant on religion, theology, or dogma - rather, it is a belief in our interconnectedness and in a loving force greater than ourselves. Whether you access the sacred through traditional worship, solitary meditation, communion with nature, or creative pursuits, one thing is clear: Rising strong after falling is a spiritual practice that brings a sense of perspective, meaning, and purpose to our lives.

Fabulous--But--
Pretty much everything here is what you've heard if you've already got the book "Rising Strong". Reckoning, Rumbling, Revolution. Sewer rats and scofflaws.
The thing is, I got so much more from this book than I did from the actual basic book. Don't get me wrong; I liked the book, but this one seems to combine it with my favorite, "The Power of Vulnerability".
I believe it's because this is a long lecture performed in front of a live audience (as opposed to a dead one? You know what I mean...) and as such, Brown is in her usual, fantastically fine form. You get all the side-stories of the venerable researcher/storyteller; you get the audience response; you get the further elucidation on various points. You get the absolute warmth and humor.
Expect to learn how to rise strong on a daily basis, to rise strong from the big things that we can usually get crippled from. Grief, forgiveness, our creative and best, most divine selves.
Minor down and dirty Texan language, major joy and laughter raised to the roofs.
I loved this book and have already listened to it twice and expect to happily run to my therapist who is from the Brown neurobiology branch with all the points that I really want to discuss. The question and answer section at the end alone is worth the price.
We're hardwired for story, our brains expect it. Learn to write your own happily-ever-after, even though it means getting up after hard knocks and skinned knees.
After all, we're all just doing the best we can with what we have.
Now? I have this book...!

Great Supplement to Brene's Books!
I was hesitant to purchase this. I've read all of Brene's books, watched all the videos, and even taken some of her classes - how could this possibly include anything new? However, this ended up being a great purchase. Some of the stories are ones she's told elsewhere but this gave a unique, additional perspective and deep dive into the spirituality of her research and practices. It had me captivated and emotional throughout. Personally, I wish this was more specific to Christianity. Instead, it's more generalized. But it still hit on many points that were close to home.
If you're new to Brene Brown, I'd recommend you start with one of her books (hard copy of Gifts of Imperfection - not the audiobook recording - or one of her more recent ones narrated by herself); but if you're an existing fan, I'd definitely recommend this as a supplement to her books. It was worth the credit!

My skepticism gladly meets Brene's Brilliance!
What did you love best about Rising Strong as a Spiritual Practice?
The best part for me was where Brene talks about the process of journaling and writing and how that and other creative hands work is what connects head and heart, and also what gives us a new way of looking at the world, as opposed to constantly seeing a shitty first draft!
What did you like best about this story?
I love Brene's Ellen stories. Her daughter seems seriously equipped at managing life with a high strung type A type person. I love how Brene paints herself kind of neurotic, yet is still so loved.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Spiritual in only the best of ways.
Any additional comments?
I would love to see more on the youngest children as being inclined towards resilience (maybe we learn from mistakes of older siblings?)

This was a review of the key points of Rising Strong in a fun atmosphere (they recorded her at a conference). I loved that it had the subject of spirituality peppered throughout it. Brene Brown's body of work has helped me so much in my life and this audiobook is no exception. Absolutely love her!

Thanks to both Tami & Brene... peace be with you!
Profound. Brilliant. Thought-provoking. Real and difficult at times. Loved the humor! Priceless. Grateful. Thank you.
