I can see how Rite of Passage might be a teacher's choice of literature for a group of young adults, but there is far better young adult sci-fi out there: better prose, better dialogue, better themes. But I also recognize that Panshin was a trailblazer in his area of expertise. Still wouldn't listen to this again though. Mostly because of the narrator's dreadful voice. Not a fan.
