Description

She's back. For the two years she's been away at boarding school, and there was no word from her. Back when we lived in the same house, she used to cut me down during the day and then leave her door open for me at night. I was stupid then, but now I'm ready to beat her at her own game.

I'm back. Two years and I can tell he still wants me, even if he acts like he's better than me. But I won't be scared away. Or pushed down. I'll call his bluff and fight back. That's what he wants, right? As long as I keep my guard up, he'll never know how much he affects me.

"As gripping as it was sexy! Witty dialogue, great chemistry and a great plot make Rival a book you don't want to end." (Colleen Hoover, New York Times best-selling author)

oh the DRAMA

So many twists & turns.... a little "unreal" but makes for a wild story! It's amazing how much thought we put into things without ASKING what happened or what the deal is.

Loved Madoc! I thought he was hilarious & I loved Fallons no BS attitude. And of course appearances by Tate & Jared! I can't wait to hear Jax story!

Madock's Story

Would you consider the audio edition of Rival to be better than the print version?

N/A

What did you like best about this story?

Picks up where Bully left off. It tells the story of Madock and gives his character a more endearing depth.

What does Abby Craden and Nelson Hobbs bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The Narration was perfect. I love that It was a his and hers narration.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Fantastic

Where does Rival rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

in the top 5!

What other book might you compare Rival to and why?

Penelope Douglas' other books were fabulous too.

Any additional comments?

I loved Bully and Until you - this book had the same love/hate to it as those books did. It was almost exactly the same which could have turned me off but it didn't.

I love this story

So far this is my favorite of the series I loved the back story for them, the drama and how everything and everyone played a role!

Not a good listen

The story line was horrible and cheesy. Mostly, the female voice sounded way too old for character. She would also change to this god-awful raspy voice for male speakers. It made me cringe every time. Do not recommend!

Madoc and Fallon

I didn't care for Madoc in Bully, but I really liked him once I got to know him more in Until You. He's funny, charismatic, loyal and cute. This book kind of rides on the line of taboo since Fallon is Madoc's step sister, but neither can deny the pull and chemistry they have for each other. And since her mom's marriage to his dad is a joke and they can't stand the other and are getting divorced it kind of becomes a moot point anyway. Not my favorite of the series, but still an enjoyable listen.

"That beautiful girl hated me, and I hated her, but – goddamn it – I loved how we hated, because it was raw and real. It didn’t make any sense, but yeah – it was real.”

As far as narration, I like Nelson Hobbs, but could do without Abby Craden.

5 stars

This whole series is one of my absolute faves. YA is usually not my genre, but Pen Douglas knows exactly how to to make these characters come alive and draw you in. I want to be Fallon and Tate! ♥️♥️♥️

Sweet

Madoc’s story was really sweet. I’m a sucker for stepbrother romances. I really enjoyed Fallon as a FMC for most of the story. Especially at the beginning. There were times she drove me crazy with the typical “plot conflict” authors like to use in romance novels - where she would withhold very obvious information - just cause - which created unnecessary conflict. That drives me crazy. So other than that and the female narrator making me eye roll a few times, I enjoyed it.

I liked that they were not a retelling but more of a sequel. This book built up Jax even more so that readers would get excited for his book.

This one wasn’t my favorite in the series but it was still great and I plan on continuing. I just wish the female narrator wasn’t so... breathy and wispy and Groany grrrr it’s been killing me.

Deep emotions and angst

The characters annoy me a lot of the time, but I'm still really entertained by the story. I listened to the audio and both narrators did a good job, and I'd recommend listening to the book if you have the chance. The main characters play too many games for too long, and definitely needed to mature quite a bit. Madoc and Fallon are step-siblings; they were already teenagers when their parents married each other, so they don't have that brotherly, sisterly thing going on. They both love the other, but neither of them is willing to admit it. Plus, there are some things that aren't quite what they seem. The parent figures in this series leave a lot to be desired, so it's no wonder these characters don't know how to act most times. Fallon thinks Madoc treated her badly, so she has some plan to get back at him and their parents. Madoc thinks Fallon just up and left without warning and said some bad things about him, so he's been treating her badly. Fallon and Madoc play tons of games with each other, which gets tiring after awhile, but I did like how passionate they are for each other. Even when they are hating on each other, you can feel the love they have. I like the depth of emotion these characters feel, and that what essentially draws me into the story. Overall, I'm enjoying this series and look forward to reading the next books.
