Description
Rogue Male is one of the classic thrillers of the 20th century. It's a gripping adventure on the themes of liberty, tyranny, and the ethics of political violence.
An Englishman plans to assassinate the dictator of a European country. But he is foiled at the last moment and falls into the hands of ruthless and inventive torturers. They devise for him an ingenious and diplomatic death but, for once, they bungle the job and he escapes. But England provides no safety from his pursuers - and the Rogue Male must strip away all the trappings of status and civilization as the hunter becomes a hunted animal.

Excellent reading of an classic
it's been so long since I read this old thriller that I'd almost forgotten it, but it stands up well. It is, of course, very much of its time, but the political references are easy to identify even now. It develops slowly, with the reader learning slowly that the narrator is not really reliable in understanding or reporting his own motivations initially. Gradually, the allusion in the title to animals shut out of the groups they were born into be ones clear.

A Dated and Boring Adventure Story
The premise is poorly set up - we do Mt know who the hero is or why he is doing what he’s doing; the “action” consists of him running aimlessly around England from unnamed enemies. Worst of all, the writing is dated, misogynist and racist. When I bought it I thought it might be a fun adventure, but there is no dramatic tension and we are given no reason to sympathize with the hero. Altogether boring and borderline offensive. Needless to say I didn’t bother finishing it.
