This exciting series opens with “the Desert Fox”, the most famous German field marshal in World War II, Erwin Rommel. A hero of the people of the Third Reich and widely respected by his opponents, Rommel proved himself highly adept at blitzkrieg warfare. He consistently outwitted his adversaries in both France and North Africa through his ability to sense the weak spot in his enemy’s deployment and by the pace at which he conducted his operations. Rommel was seriously wounded in France just three days before the aborted attempt on Hitler’s life. Rommel subsequently came under suspicion of being involved in the plot and, under pressure, committed suicide. Rommel displayed an outstanding ability to seize the initiative and retain it, and here, Charles Messenger draws on the skills behind this ability for the benefit of modern-day leaders.
Charles Messenger served for 20 years as an officer in the Royal Tank Regiment before becoming a full-time military historian and defense analyst. He is the author of nearly 40 books, including The Blitzkrieg Story. He lives in London.

Informative.. but Dry
War Historian Charles Messenger provides a well-researched and meticulously-documented chronicle of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's military career - from brave WWI actions as a young man to leading the capture of France in 1940 to the brilliant offensive efforts of North Africa to disappointing mismanagement in Italy and Normandy. Messenger further does a nice job describing Rommel's "Golden Boy" relationship with Hitler - ultimately ending with disillusionment and a forced suicide with cyanide.
Unfortunately, I had developed no understanding of the man by the end of the book.. this offering isn't much of a Biography.. more a clinical critique of the Desert Fox's military leadership style & supply management skills (if that's what you're looking for, it's great).
Reader Tom Weiner's annoying lilting cadence (incomprehensibly emphasizing every second syllable) definitely takes away from my enjoyment of the book. Weiner's diction, timbre, pacing, and tone are indisputably professional, but Blackstone Audio Inc could have cast this project better. A text (Paper/eBook) version of this book would be better - if given the choice.
As a "casual" reader of military history - interested in the key figures of WWII - I was hoping for a more consummable exposé when I downloaded this book. Instead, I got something written for a student at West Point Academy.
Thankfully, I got this 5/10 star book as a 'Plus' option (included with my subscription). If you can do the same, it's an information-packed distraction perfect for a quiet afternoon. If they ask for a Credit.. reserve it for something else.
