The stories in this collection reflect a fundamental truth about this city: history depends on who's telling it. Too often the story of Santa Fe has been told only by the conquerors and the tourism PR firms. In Santa Fe Noir, you will hear the voices of the others: locals and Native people, unemployed veterans and queer transplants, the homeless and the paroled-to-here. When I asked the contributors you'll hear if they had a Santa Fe story to tell, they invariably shrugged and said something to the effect of, "Oh, I've got a story all right. But it might not fit the image of Santa Fe you're looking for".

Outstanding!
I'm completely hooked on the Akashic Noir Cities series, and this is one of the better ones, partially, I think, because it was published in 2020, later than the first batch of the series published in 2014. Much of the content of the earlier books seems dated in sensibility, and are also extremely male-heavy. What might have seemed cutting edge contemporary 20 years ago, when those stories were written, feels quite outdated now. I enjoyed all of the stories in Santa Fe Noir, although of course I have my favourites. My main takeaway is that there are infinite places to creatively dispose of inconvenient bodies in and around Santa Fe, and that revenge is a perfectly justifiable motive for murder. This compilation is infused with a good deal of irony, a modicum of humour, and loads of heart. The narrators are all outstanding, and are well matched to the stories they perform. I'll definitely return to this audiobook again and again. It's money well spent.
