“It’s he-e-e-re”… the most heart-pounding, jump-out-of-your-seat, scream-worthy book in the Save the Cat!® series.

  • A deep dive into horror’s core ingredients—Monster, House, and Sin—with subtypes, examples, and tools to help you design your own diabolical tale
  • The mad science of turning Save the Cat!’s 15 beats into a horror story that builds tension, sharpens scares, and leaves your audience squirming
  • How to balance Scares, Gross-outs, and Dread to torment your audience flawlessly
  • Why knowing your horror’s heartbeat—Slow Burn vs. Relentless—changes everything
  • How to use the Dread-O-Meter to engineer spine-tingling scenes with precision
  • How to build memorable horror characters—from first-to-die victims to final girls and guys—while exploring how their flaws, choices, and arcs mirror deeper fears and social truths

I have read/listened to every Save the cat books in the series now and this one is definitely at the top with original. In my opinion Save the Cat is extremely important for people learning to write screenplays, novels, scripts…I have read many other books for novel and screenwriting and Save the Cat is definitely part of the best of the best. This Horror version of Save the cat just makes things seem more clear. I don’t know, I just think that hearing every way you can break down beats for any genre helps me understand the beats more and more.

Another great addition to the series.

I write movies professionally. While I love horror, I've only written a few horror scripts, and these haven't been what I'd call effective. None of them have really piqued producer interest yet. Before this book, I wasn't great at the dread building up to the scares. Nash has a lot of great tips on how to do exactly that, plus how to break rules and expectations in the genre. Honestly, I get it now. This is going to be fun going forward. Highly recommend to anybody in the scare business, or writing nerds in general.

Great story math
