Description

Discover the fascinating intellectual legacy of 19th-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer.

Unveiling the profound reflections and philosophical musings of legendary thinker Arthur Schopenhauer, this collection compiles some of his greatest works, providing modern listeners with a detailed and unparalleled glimpse into Schopenhauer’s worldview and philosophy.

Poignant, humorous, witty, and deeply thoughtful, this book explores the full range of Schopenhauer’s ideas, artfully blending the spiritual and metaphysical with cutting questions about ethics, logic, and the true nature of reality. Drawing on themes from classical Greek philosophy and Eastern spirituality, Schopenhauer’s writings have left an enduring legacy that continues to influence us to this day.

Inside this collection, you’ll discover:

  • World as Will and Idea Volumes 1-3, widely considered Schopenhauer’s magnum opus and the foundation of his philosophical doctrine
  • Wisdom of Life, a profound and enlightening essay ranging over themes of rationality, success, happiness, and the power of the will
  • Counsels and Maxims, a collection of writings that combine classical Western philosophy, Eastern spiritualism, and contemporary 19th-century thought
  • The Art of Being Right, a witty and sarcastic exposé of debating and the underhanded moves of argumentation

Perfect for newcomers to Schopenhauer’s philosophy and experienced intellectual adventurers alike, the Schopenhauer Collection serves as an ideal handbook or reference guide for students, as well as anybody who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the ideas that came to dominate 19th century philosophy.

A botched production

Not sure what the deal is with this one. Points for trying I guess?

The entire production seems out of its depth, The earlier sections sound like the narrator is dealing with too much caffeine or maybe just nerves. The rhythms of the wordings are way off and makes Schopenhauer's already dense prose borderline unintelligible. Towards the later sections the narrator seems to come into his own. At that point, I would have gone back and re-recorded the earlier sections to ensure consistency across the whole, or perhaps additional rehearsing beforehand would have helped.

Furthermore, numerous flubs weren't edited out, You can hear the narrator using time-stamping techniques on numerous occasions when he makes a mistake, but apparently no one went back to cut them out.

Additionally, the French and German sections of the texts have pretty shoddy pronunciation. Why not just translate everything to English, since the main text has already been translated from German?

It's a shame, since Waters possesses an immensely listenable timbre and cadence once he finds his rhythm, this could have been a great collection, it just needed more care and attention to detail.
