Description

While crossing the desert with the caravan, Hadjar got involved in the search for the library of Mage City, where the elixir that could turn a person into a god was stored.

After fighting against the desert bandits, he and his friend Einen suddenly entered Underworld City thanks to Serra's amulets. How many stories and legends he'd heard from South Wind and Serra about it!

How many times had he dreamed of coming there and talking to the Sage? How will this mysterious city welcome Hadjar? Will the underworld's residents become his allies or his enemies? Will he finally find out what the "true path" of cultivation is? Will he be able to find the elixir he needs to become a god and make the Jasper Emperor answer for his mistakes?

Enjoyable

Another solid book, nothing crazy but satisfying. I listen to books while I work and this was perfect to keep the mind engaged while deep in spreadsheets

Best story so far

I was struggling with this series. It was hot and cold in most of the previous books but these last two books have really improved my opinion.

Lapse in Continuity

Overall, as an isolated book this just as good as the others in the series (overall about 4 stars). However, the continuity with previous books goes out the window for this one. Hadjar's knowledge and the baseline power of all the characters fluctuates so wildly that I too often found myself saying, "that makes no sense."

Some examples [SPOILERS]:
- In the very first book Hadjar asks his mentor if the sage in charge of undercity is at the lord level, and his mentor tells him that he is beyond that level. In this book he is at the lord level and Hadjar somehow has never heard of that level.
- Hadjar creates a new technique capable of stopping an attack from the dragon's shadow --which is supposed to be beyond the power of an immortal-- but that same technique cannot hold back an attack from a spirit knight.

There are several more, but that should be enough to explain why I docked a star from this book in the series.

Good story ruined by cliche miscommunication

I enjoyed the series so far. But the cliche drama caused by characters refusing to talk and explain themselves ruined it somewhat for me.

One of my favorite wuxia

First of all I have to say I'm usually not a fan of Russian litrpg / wuxia novels. The culture is usually just too different and it is harder to relate with the characters and the story. Luckily for me, it hasn't stopped me from trying Dragon Heart series and I'm so glad I did. I really like the MC, progression, the story and the world-building .. so pretty much everything. MC is definitely one of the most likable ones from the myriad of books that I have read. Unlike most wuxia leads, MC is not a self-centered a-hole and he actually seems to be a genuinely nice guy, yet not wimpy at all and he can make tough choices if needed. Power progression has been kept in check and it feels consistent across all books so far which is definitely a big plus. Can't wait for the next one.

MORE BOOKS PLEASE

Book 5 was no less engrossing as the previous 4. Great story and story teller. A change in story style then the typical cultivation books. Highly recommended.

Just give a damn blood oath about it!

Continuity suffers in this volume, and I see an easy solution to Sarahs sister that would just be common sense in this world. Still a great story though.

one of my favorite so far

Really enjoying this series. It continues to have a great story line, with unique support characters and an enjoyable path for the MC. I hope that Kevin Collins stays the narrator of this series as he's done such a great job so far. I do wish the opposition characters had a little more variety in the "I'm mad, let's fight" voices. The "lower your voice and yell" voice that's associated with everyone makes it tough in larger fights. It would nice to hear more variety. That said, I'm certain none of us can really understand how difficult narration is and I hope Collins continues to be the narrator of this and many other series.
** I admit I'm doing a copy/paste on this series. I didn't review them when I listened to them but felt these books deserved a review.

ok this book is epic on so many levels

these books are so well written, even in the sad parts i still enjoy this story.

and the mad general always leaves me on the edge of the seat regardless of if he is getting his but kicked, or dominating the fight.

its funny when i felt like the other characters were insulting for calling him a barbarian, and then i realize he really is a barbarian lol.
