À propos de cet audio
In a time when communities throughout our nation are divided by racial tension and violence, the story of two men—one Black, one White—who become fast and devoted friends in a common cause can teach us all a lesson in tolerance, love, and respect. Paul Lessard is a conservative, White, liberal arts–educated foundation president. He is the son of a Marine colonel and a Carnegie Hero Medal recipient, a former collegiate athlete whose work ethic carried him to academic achievement, post-graduate work at Harvard, and professional success. He is a happily married man, a father of two, grandfather of five, and a believer in the American Dream.
Greg Commander is an African American product of High Point, NC’s impoverished inner city, the son of a crack addict and a remarkable mother. An eighth-grade dropout and single father of two, his life has been marked by deprivation, struggle, and violence. For years, he led High Point’s largest gang, the Juice Crew, which was eventually shut down by a combined law enforcement task force.
Greg served 18 years in federal prison, during which time he learned to read, passed the GED exam, and underwent a profound spiritual transformation. Following his release, he met Paul, who befriended him, believed in him, and helped him go to college, where he earned two undergraduate degrees. He later partnered with Paul to save area youth and give back to the community he once nearly destroyed.
It is their belief in the inherent worth of all young people—and their shared commitment to building a safe and equitable community—that brings these two men together. Their friendship and eventual partnership form a remarkable story that teaches us all about the power of love, mutual respect, and redemption.
