Description

The Office meets Stephen King, dressed up in holiday tinsel, in this fun, festive, and frightening horror-comedy set during the horror publishing boom of the ’80s, by New York Times best-selling satirist Andrew Shaffer.

Out of work for months, Lussi Meyer is desperate to work anywhere in publishing. Prestigious Blackwood-Patterson isn’t the perfect fit, but a bizarre set of circumstances leads to her hire and a firm mandate: Lussi must find the next horror superstar to compete with Stephen King, Anne Rice, and Peter Straub. It’s the ’80s, after all, and horror is the hottest genre.

But as soon as she arrives, Lussi finds herself the target of her coworkers’ mean-spirited pranks. The hazing reaches its peak during the company’s annual Secret Santa gift exchange, when Lussi receives a demonic-looking object that she recognizes but doesn’t understand. Suddenly, her coworkers begin falling victim to a series of horrific accidents akin to a George Romero movie, and Lussi suspects that her gift is involved. With the help of her former author, the flamboyant Fabien Nightingale, Lussi must track down her anonymous Secret Santa and figure out the true meaning of the cursed object in her possession before it destroys the company - and her soul.

Slow But Fun

Actual rating 3.5! I went into this book totally blind and found it to be a fun, supernatural romp. It is a very slow burn with the paranormal elements only really revealing themselves at the end, but still a good book to pass the time with.

Lucy is an editor who begins work at a prestigious publishing house, only to have strange goings on and accidents plaguing her work.

Lucy herself is a fun character. She works hard and has a great attitude, which makes her woefully outmatched for her eccentric coworkers. The side characters are definitely memorable, none more than my personal favourite, Fabian.

As said earlier, the plot is a slow burn, which wasn’t expected given how short the book is. I wish there had been more scares and creepiness, but the book did have fun with its premise.

The prose and voice were funny, and I did find myself chuckling quite a bit. It was also a fun inside look into the publishing side of the industry, so my writer’s heart enjoyed that element,

Though I think it could have been more, I did enjoy SECRET SANTA and think it’s a fun, quick book for anyone who loves horror and books in general.

NotWhat I Expected

I’m not sure why this is marketed as a Christmas horror story. It does have Christmas, but it is barely part of the story at all. The story itself reads like a low brow Riley Sager book. There were a few good parts. I didn’t completely hate it. One thing that kept me going, though, was the fantastic narration.

Sucked

Totally disappointed, little to do with Christmas. The ending was bland and the main character is obnoxious
