Its O-k
Found the story fine. Have a decent biblical knowledge and connection to references but felt a bit left out at moments and American history as I am not American. Felt was not well enough explained as to alot of the setting and the villain of the story feels very clouded and not particularly clear. Don't feel like children particularly well written, finished Ender's game before this novel and written children much deeper and strength of adults but find such young age of things far fetched and vary between simpletons and baby like to mature adults.

Recommended
I didn’t know this was the first book in a long series when I started, but it hooked me right away and I’m looking forward to starting the second book now. It’s a little odd how the audiobook narrators keep switching throughout this version, but they’re all good so I didn’t mind. Very different than the Ender series in setting, but just as engaging.

Akin to the Alchemist
This is one of a few books I fondly remember of the 300 some-odd books I read one summer 10 years ago.
First, it is written so well then it may actually confuse your historical knowledge! Where interest came as a in-depth exploration of human psyche, I feel this is more a kin to the Alchemist in that the protagonist, Alvin, questions and explores moral and ethical dilemmas and their affects on the world. The twist of a unique sort of magic altering world history becomes a sort of bonus curiosity to the tale.
The readers do a true performance - not quite everyone’s cup of tea, but if you let go the voices will pull you in to the setting.
Overall, if you enjoyed Endor’s Game, the Alchemist, or philosophy in general, then you will probably enjoy this.

Orson Scott Card writes with such truth. It makes you invest in the characters,the story and the emotions evoked.
