Description
Sixteen-year-old Neryn is alone in the land of Alban, where the oppressive king has ordered anyone with magical strengths captured and brought before him. Eager to hide her own canny skill - a uniquely powerful ability to communicate with the fairy-like Good Folk - Neryn sets out for the legendary Shadowfell, a home and training ground for a secret rebel group determined to overthrow the evil King Keldec.
During her dangerous journey, she receives aid from the Good Folk, who tell her she must pass a series of tests in order to recognize her full potential. She also finds help from a handsome young man, Flint, who rescues her from certain death - but whose motives in doing so remain unclear.
Neryn struggles to trust her only allies. They both hint that she alone may be the key to Alban's release from Keldec's rule. Homeless, unsure of who to trust, and trapped in an empire determined to crush her, Neryn must make it to Shadowfell not only to save herself, but to save Alban.

Did not disappoint
I have recently fallen in love with Juliet Marillier’s books and haven’t found one I didn’t like yet. So glad this was turned into an audiobook and can’t wait for the next two.
I haven’t listened to an audiobook yet where the narrator can do so many different voices so well and convincingly. Henrietta Meire did an amazing job.

Narrator is perfect for the story
I really enjoy the way this narrator reads the story. The story basically is the inner monologue of a 16 year old girl (I think? Around that age anyway) as she figures out how to save the world. I enjoy reading the story written as well as hearing it read out, a different and both experiences enjoyable in their own ways.

Overly dramatic to my taste but well written and narrated. .
Much of the book drove me crazy. The narrator is very good but mainly reads in an extremely dramatic weeping wailing, anguished tone which is hard to take, especially for so many hours.
The main character is always suffering, freezing, in pain, sooo frightened. It’s so dramatic. It just goes on and on. I wish they would lighten up a bit and have a little bit of fun, or just buck up a little or something. It’s just rather endless.
On the good side, the writing is actually good. And so is the narration. So I suppose this is just personal taste on my part. I just found it overly dramatic and complainy.
I liked it enough that I’m going to check out the second book of this series, (assuming there’s one written which I haven’t checked yet). :).

Narrator ruined this book for me
I would be happy to read the rest of this series, but I can't listen to this narrator.
The book takes place in ancient Scotland. the narrator is English. Her voice is whiny. The strong, Scottish heroine sounds like a pathetic English school girl. The narrator attempts a Scot's accent for the fae characters: attempts and fails.
