Get another narrator, please!!

The nasal voice of this narrator was so annoying that I cancelled the book less than 14 minutes into it. This woman opens her nose to speak!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I really enjoyed this book, however, it was a huge SPOILER for the first book in the series. It took away the entire element of suspense and excitement for the main character as she unravels the mystery of Daemon Black.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Justine Eyre?

Rebecca Gibel or maybe Tavia Gilbert. Justine Eyre is great but her narration for this particular series doesn't seem to fit quite right.

Awful narrator!!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator. She sounded like she was pinching her nose while trying to use the restroom. It was distracting.

How could the performance have been better?

A completely different narrator

I'm very easy to please when it comes to narration, but I couldn't take the sound of her voice for more than 25 minutes. She constantly mispronounced the names and some common words. It was almost painful. I've purchased the kindle version and will be requesting a refund on the audio version. Such a disappointment.

Read this first, before book one

I read this after the first book in the series because some other reviewers recommended that, but I think it would have been better to read this first. (I've read the whole series now.)

This book talks mainly about the relationship between Dawson and Bethany. Dawson is the brother of the main character of the rest of the series. I didn't like getting engaged in the story of Daemon and Katie in the first book, then going back to a previous point in time to hear this story about his brother. I still enjoyed the book and it provided helpful context, but I would have rather read this one first to go chronologically. I think it would have made some of Daemon's actions in the first book make more sense to me too. It's also recommended by the author to read this one first.

Hope that helps someone when deciding the reading order!

Yes, I would recommend audiobook. Narrator nailed it.

What did you like best about this story?

The Black siblings would always be there for each other regardless of any predicament they may encounter.

Which scene was your favorite?

Kiss scene between Dawson and Bethany in which he unintentionally begins glowing like a star.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I listened to it in one sitting. Enjoyed narrator Justine Eyre.

I read and listened to Shadows after I had read the whole series.

The ending made me mad

I’m going to get straight to the point

1. The voice of the narrator was very annoying. There are curse words in the story and she sounded weird saying them. There was no emotion. I could have done without the constant cursing.

2. The story line was god. I mean aliens and forbidden romance, I could not have asked for a better subject. I listened to the annoying voice just to have a terrible ending with no type of closure.

3. I’m in my 30s so maybe this book is for a younger audience, I saw a ton of good reviews. But it’s not worth my time or money.

Perfect prequel

We get a lot of answers and we get Dawson, perfect combo! This novella is between Obsidian and Onyx definitely a story we needed to know Dawson and Bethany's story. Their side is different and has so many answers about the series. The perfect addition to it all. Simply enjoy the ride!

JLA never lets you down

The author is never a let down. I’m not sure she could write a terrible book if she tried. She’s hilarious, and as cheesy as some of this story is - she made me laugh, swoon, cry and feel all the emotions a good YA novel does to a girl. I really liked it and will be continuing with the series. Only complaint is how whiney the narrator makes Dawson sound. The other males sound great, but him - whiney as hell. Also, updates to the covers reeeeeally need to be created. Those covers are awful. They don’t do the descriptions of these characters any justice whatsoever.

Four Stars.

I actually liked reading about Dawson’s and Beth’s story. They are made to seem so fragile when you learn about them later in the books. It was nice reading about them having a normal life until things took a turn for the worse for them. I only wish that they would’ve used a different narrator for their story because it was so hard to remember that this wasn’t about Daemon and Katy. I also like it when they use a male voice for the POV of the male protagonist. As much as I think Justine does a great job in the series, I think Dawson and Beth should’ve had their own voice.

Best book in the series

I enjoyed this beginning of the series book, but the rest of the stories had me skipping. This really was the only one that didn't irritate tf out of me. Not even out of curiosity could I get through book 2.
