It was ok. It was also included w my audible membership so that counts in its favor. Pretty mundane, little character development and the story is telegraphed terribly. Good for background noise

What happens to society when the world ends? It's a question that's been answered many times, but this story takes a unique look at the different social constructs that emerge centuries after the collapse of civilization due to (inferred) nuclear war.

Following several different tribes through the last habitable lands of the United States this story focuses on the struggles of families, tribes, and creatures to survive in a world flung back into the stone age, with primitive weapons and nomadic groups of hunter gatherers.

The first book does a good job at character introduction and lays the foundation for what I found to be a gripping and enjoyable series. It is definitely worth a listen, and the final book is worth the credit.

The only thing I would have liked to see improved would be the narrator's voice acting for character differentiation. It got confusing as to whom was speaking when conversations were held, especially given the vast landscape of terrain and personalities in this series. Overall, it was still easy to listen to, but could have been improved upon.

Authors Glynn James and J.Thorn conceive of a thought-provoking future.. dozens of generations after a Nuclear Apocalypse: human society has devolved into collections of Indigenous-styled Tribes - scraping out a life while living in hunter-gatherer-scavenger organizations.
This story follows the newly promoted chief of the Elk Clan ('Jonah') [and a 15-year-old girl ('Seren')] as they plan and execute an annual migratory "Walk" (now more religious/traditional than practical) from their summer village to winter shelter in a ruined city named 'Eliz' across savage wilderlands. A self-serving zealot stranger ('Gaston') accompanies the Clan -  sabotaging their efforts in a bid to get them to protect him on a journey to a near-mythical safe haven ('White Citadel'); anthropomorphic wolves stalk them; and marauding/extorting gangs pursue and attack them. The scenario is loaded with interesting potential plotlines.
Unfortunately, the execution isn't great. The story is full of glaring plot holes (*everyone* - to the lowliest child - is somehow literate, for example), character motivations are implausible or poorly-explained, and the pacing is weak (the book isn't able to grab attention and hold onto it).

A significant suspension of disbelief is required to really enjoy this story, and Glynn/Thorn are unable to make that easier.

Likewise regrettable: subpar narration from Kevin Pierce contributes to the deficiencies. Having heard him before, Mr. Pierce is excellent at reading non-fiction.. but his matter-of-fact tonality just isn't suited to emotional and fear-driven Fantasy Literature - and his voice-acting repertoire is limited. Podium Audio did a poor job casting the project.

Altogether, I rate 'Shadows Of A Lost Age' a pedestrian 3 stars out of 10. It's not horrible if you can get it as a 'Plus' selection, I guess.. but save your Credit for something else should they ask for it.
