À propos de cet audio
Ship of Smoke and Steel is the launch of Django Wexler's cinematic, action-packed epic fantasy Wells of Sorcery trilogy.
In the lower wards of Kahnzoka, the great port city of the Blessed Empire, 18-year-old ward boss Isoka enforces the will of her criminal masters with the power of Melos, the Well of Combat. The money she collects goes to keep her little sister living in comfort, far from the bloody streets they grew up on. When Isoka's magic is discovered by the government, she's arrested and brought to the Emperor's spymaster, who sends her on an impossible mission: Steal Soliton, a legendary ghost ship - a ship from which no one has ever returned. If she fails, her sister’s life is forfeit.
On board Soliton, nothing is as simple as it seems. Isoka tries to get close to the ship's mysterious captain, but to do it, she must become part of the brutal crew and join their endless battles against twisted creatures. She doesn't expect to have to contend with feelings for a charismatic fighter who shares her combat magic, or for a fearless princess who wields an even darker power.

“Truly epic, fierce, and exhilarating, Ship of Smoke and Steel will capture you and lock you away. With magical combat sequences fit for the big screen, the action is almost as breathtaking as the intrigue.” (Morgan Rhodes, New York Times best-selling author of the Falling Kingdoms series)

Great Mature Fantasy. Awkward Narration.
'Isoka Walker' - streetwise Adept of Melos (combat magic) - is a fascinating character. Author Django Wexler introduces a ruthlessly utilitarian street enforcer with fierce dedication to those that she loves. Wexler puts her in an unapologetically brutal reality (on a mysterious city-sized ship populated with magically gifted denizens given as tribute from nations around the world and horrific giant monsters). Vicious infighting & Darwinian winnowing ensues.
The character repeatedly reminded me of 'Katniss Everness' (from the Hunger Games books), except casually homicidal and perpetually horny + Bi-curious for some reason. The story is often *too* gritty & sometimes strikingly dark, but I quite enjoyed it
..and then we come to presentation. Reader Catherine Ho is undeniably professional - with commendable voice-acting and tone - but reads with an odd staccato cadence. At the ends of sentences - and often in the middle of them - Ho pauses for uncomfortably long periods.. sometimes so long that I checked my device to see if the app had crashed (accelerating playback speed to 1.15X helped somewhat). Recorded Books Inc. provides exemplary technical support, but the audiobook has an irritating "interrupted" character.
Altogether, I give 'Ship Of Smoke And Steel' 7.5/10 stars. You should definitely give the 'Sample' a listen before you download the book (the hesitant reading pattern is fairly annoying), but if you can get the book off of the 'Plus' menu, do not hesitate. Even if they asked for a Credit it would be worth it.

Nope Way Too Choppy
Ive tried again and again to get into the audiobook because I really want to fit this into my TBR pile but its written with many short sentences and the narrator takes long pauses after.... each.... and... every... sentence... Its not something Ive ever noticed before but its driving me crazy with this book. I just dont think the writing style works for this narrator.
