"Simmering with magic, peril, romance, and heartbreak." —Leigh Bardugo, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Shadow and Bone
Born without a trace of magic, Tamsin Lark is no match for the sorceresses and Hollowers who populate the magical underground of Boston. But when the only parent she’s ever known disappears without so much as a goodbye, she has no choice but to join in their cutthroat pursuit of enchanted relics to keep herself—and her brother, Cabell—alive.
Ten years later, rumors are swirling that her guardian found a powerful ring from Arthurian legend just before he vanished. A run-in with her rival Emrys ignites Tamsin’s hope that the ring could free Cabell from a curse that threatens both of them. But they aren’t the only ones who covet the ring.
As word spreads, greedy Hollowers start circling, and many would kill to have it for themselves. While Emrys is the last person Tamsin would choose to partner with, she needs all the help she can get to edge out her competitors in the race for the ring. Together, they dive headfirst into a vipers’ nest of dark magic, exposing a deadly secret with the power to awaken ghosts of the past and shatter her last hope of saving her brother. . . .

Millicent Foxboro is haunted. Not by ghosts, but by the anguish of her past and the uncertainty of her future. After all, even in the progressive year of 1928, most people would balk at hiring a woman who’d spent two months in a mental ward for traumatic amnesia. So when an uncommon assistantship to a reclusive Professor of mythology falls into her lap with an ungodly salary attached, her desperation for stability overrides her cautious nature.

For five years, her nightmares did not return. But then the whispers started. A rumbling of rebellion poised to strike. The King of Nexos had never attacked before. Until now. "Perfect for fans that enjoy crossovers between fairytales/fables with modern times.” —Bookstr
“Breakneck pacing and complex world building.” —BookPage
"Balances horror and heartbreak with humor and tenderness. Heady romance blooms between Tam and Emrys, but it’s pessimistic Tam’s rewarding journey toward hope, trust, and self-acceptance that serves as the story’s heart." —Publishers Weekly
“A gripping, thought-provoking, and inventive dark fantasy.” —Kirkus Reviews
“Rips relentlessly through the bones of Arthurian myth as Tamsin forges a legacy of her own... engrossing.” —Booklist
"Fans of Lore will be excited to see Bracken’s dark take on Arthurian legend in this adrenaline-fueled contemporary fantasy." —School Library Journal
The lead character, Tamsin, is headstrong and loveable. She is highly flawed, given her aloofness and difficulty making friends, but she is deeply loyal and her reactions make sense given her backstory. I found her quite compelling and sympathetic, a character whose emotions are explored as she opens herself to trusting others more. Also compelling are the side characters she meets along the way, such as the energetic sorceress Neve, rival bounty hunter Emrys, and of course, Tamsin's brother Cabell. Each character feels like a real person with layers, flaws, and motivations.
Much of the plot is a combination of character interactions and uncovering the mysteries of Avalon, and even in moments where things are "quiet," there is an undercurrent of tension given the precariousness of Avalon's location. I really enjoyed the way Bracken integrated and changed some Arthurian lore, giving her own spin on familiar figures while staying true to some well-known legends.
This made the world-building even better, given the vivid descriptions. You truly feel like you are in this area of Avalon, and the world is immersive enough that I never felt lost. The action is exciting, the twists are dramatic, and the ending took more than a few turns that I did not expect. It truly does seem dire for our heroes by the end, and I can only imagine what will happen next. I can't wait to read more!
Exciting Arthurian-Inspired Story
