I originally read this and its sequel shortly after they were first released. They are two of my favourite books, but it becomes complicated to recommend them to a new audience as the author Kathleen Duey tragically passed away before she could complete the trilogy, so the overarching story remains unfinished. But even so, they are truly so good and worth the read (or listen, the narrator is very good!). They are completely different from her other published books which were for a younger audience. Skin Hunger and its sequel are true dark fantasy, and are rather mature with heavy themes. I truly wish more people will read Skin Hunger and Sacred Scars and remember Duey as the fantastic writer that she was. I remember emailing her after I had read Sacred Scars about how much I enjoyed the book, and she gave me such a kind reply. I think about her and these books often :')
