Description

Featuring a conversation with the authors!

In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: What might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place....

The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease. Is Evie a medical anomaly to be studied? Or is she a demon who must be slain?

Set in a small Appalachian town whose primary employer is a women's prison, Sleeping Beauties is a wildly provocative, gloriously absorbing father/son collaboration between Stephen King and Owen King.

Loved And Hated

Sleeping Beauties, to keep it simple, while I loved the story and narrator did a tremendous! job at brining each individual charter to life. I absolutely HATED the ending. The novel spends the whole book building up too what I thought would be an amazing climatic ending, only have the story just peter out and end so disappointingly borning. The ending left me with the thought of "Why the hell did I just waste my time on this?"

Not bad, not great

It’s a decent book. In the interview at the end Owen and Stephen King state they were going to write this as a tv show - it shows. This reads more like a weekly tv episode then a novel. So so.

Disappointing

I wanted to love this book, after all it's Stephen King! But... I felt like I could tell when he was writing and when his son Owen was writing. It just didn't have the pacing of a typical King book of the genre. It seemed to go off on too many tangents and subplot developments that didn't seem necessary to the story. I found myself getting bored and wishing something, anything, would happen to push the story on but it tended to get bogged down in so many places. I feel like I'm committing sacrilege because I do enjoy so many of Mr. King' s books.... Just not this one.

Better on audible than trying to read

I tried to read this book several times without success so tried audiobook and it was great. Easy to listen to and good story, not my favorite book but if you are looking for something to entertain you, it’s a good choice.

Meh

The story is interesting enough to want to finish I suppose and the voice actor was amazing at giving the many (too many) characters their own voices and personalities. The writing however is a little lacklustre. The characters are cliche and predictable and none of them are particularly likeable. The plot takes on so many different political and social stances that it almost feels condescending and also you’re left wondering what the point was at all. If you’ve got a spare 25 hours then sure give it a listen but you aren’t missing anything spectacular if you don’t.

throughly enjoyed

I found the story to really force myself in to thinking about the human condition, about the perceived, stereotypical differences between the sees and how I myself viewed these stigmas. it's very easy to say women are gentle and men are aggressive but there are always exceptions to the rule. With how society has evolved, how fine the line has become between male and female that I was continously finding myself falling into the stereotype belief of the difference between the sees only to then find the authors calling out those same stereotypes. This novel is an excellent read/listen, thoroughly entertaining as well as thought provoking. I highly recommend listening to this and once you emerge from the tale take time to to evaluate your own belief system and how much you buy into the stereotypes or on the other hand how much has your belief system changed? I just found the whole experience very interesting.

one of my bottom 5 King novels

The performance was amazing, loved the narrator. The story starts out strong, however, is plagued with too many characters to keep up with, a confusing and boring middle and lackluster ending. It's worth listening to, but only if you can get it for free.

Man bashing for 25 hours...

Let me preface this review by saying that I believe in equality for all sexes, races, nationalities, and sexual orientations. But this book was ridiculously over the top when it comes to man bashing. Every plot and twist revolves around how poorly men treat women.

Let’s just say that if Stephen King’s name wasn’t on this book, I doubt it would have been so popular on its own merits. If this is a sign of Owen King’s future writing, I’ll definitely be passing.

Too many analogies/similes, too many segways

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. Too many analogies/similes, too many segways. I lost focus several times due to journeys down paths that should not have been explored.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sleeping Beauties?

N/A

Which scene was your favorite?

N/A

Was Sleeping Beauties worth the listening time?

No. Easily could have been 1/3rd the size.

Any additional comments?

I’m a huge fan of Stephen King, so – to me – this book is a letdown. The story is solid, but too drawn out. Too many analogies/similes, too many segways. I lost focus several times due to journeys down paths that should not have been explored.I’ll be hard-pressed to buy another Owen King/Stephen King combination.

unbelievably bad.

Made it a little more than half way. One of the dumbest books I've ever read.

The performer made it significantly worse than it needed to be.

Boring

My wife and I are Stephen King fans but this one fell flat. It was overtly political and pandering in a very clumsy way. Jabs were taken at social issues and political figures with all the subtlety of rock in your shoe. This book was hard to get excited about and the lack of a discernable climax didn't help matters. The narrator had such a bad fake southern accent that it was distracting.

can't stand it.

I can not stand the emotionless weird talking of the reader Marin Ireland. book might even be alright if I could get past this horrible reading. How this reading got published idk. Book goes too in depth with people of no importance, just takes up time.

Just pathetic!!

I love almost all Stephen king novels, but I want my money back on this one. No plot, no purpose, the worst character development and an ending nothing short of lazy. The narrator was ok, but could have done a better job distinguishing the characters

Slow and boring. Couldn’t even finish it.

The title says it all. The first Stephen King book I’ve read that I hated.

Booooring

I liked the narrator's voice but hated the story. The concept is interesting but what could be a really gripping premise droned on and on and on and on winding up as lame as the characters in it. I never felt suspense. I waited so long for a climax that never came. I was left wondering what the point of the book was anyway.
