Lily is haunted by memories–of who she once was, and of a person, long gone, who defined her existence. She has nothing but time now, as she recounts the tale of Snow Flower, and asks the gods for forgiveness.

In nineteenth-century China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan county developed their own secret code for communication: nu shu (“women’s writing”). Some girls were paired with laotongs, “old sames,” in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments.

With the arrival of a silk fan on which Snow Flower has composed for Lily a poem of introduction in nu shu, their friendship is sealed and they become “old sames” at the tender age of seven. As the years pass, through famine and rebellion, they reflect upon their arranged marriages, loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. In a stunning period piece that takes the viewer straight to the awe-inspiring belly of Chinese culture, this is a book that can only be described as "beautiful". From the lessons we learn , alongside kind Lily , and her kin, with and without blood, we see a new world around us, we learn to measure our days in joys and sorrows instead of wealth and yearning. A beautifully crafted and unique tale, forever offering new and surprising twists that were completely unforseen, and yet somehow just mildly reminiscent of the familiar tales of the Island of Sea Women, this story is one for any who might be wishing to sink into something so familiar, so cozy, as it belongs on every shelf in every home.

The narration was flawless, with her voice cracking in sympathy as she feels the story, her execution of different shades of tone beyond perfection. My only desire is to start the book over and begin listening again.

I’m Chinese but I was raised in Malaysia. I was brought up with many of the customs and superstitions mentioned in this book but I learned so much more about my culture in this book than I ever knew. And Lisa See weaves all this history and culture into an exquisitely charming story. This is my second Lisa See book and I will read all her books. I’ve become a big fan of hers!
