Great narration, mediocre story

I struggled with this story. While the narration was absolutely fantastic, I just didn't enjoy the story. I couldn't develop any sympathy for the MC; she never seemed to learn or grow from her experiences. Instead, she bumbled along, seemingly unable to develop any situational awareness. My sympathy lay with those attempting to help her and her daughter survive, despite Riley's repeated bad decisions and inadvertent near-sabotage of their efforts. She came off as annoyingly naive and lacking good judgement; not the kind of protagonist I'm looking for in a post-apocalyptic novel. I will not be purchasing the next book.

An easy listen

The narrator was great. The story flowed well and was easy to listen to. Other than Riley, the characters and plot were mostly believable. Riley's character was annoying at times. Her character is a successful surgeon, mother of three, wife of a military man, and a widow. Yet her behaviour and choices made her out to be weak, naive, dependant, and reactive, which seems completely incongruous with what would be expected of a character with her background. Overall, though, this book kept my attention and was quite enjoyable.

Ridiculous main character

I was so glad when this ended, and would never get a sequel. The main Character Riley, is a mess of illogical imotions and bad decisions, while blaming Cooper for virtually everything.

There are also huge plot holes ..like spotting a whitetail buck outside their cabin, and wondering if she could lure it closer to catch it for food, when there is 7 feet of snow outside...no deer bounds away in 7 feet if snow. In fact you wouldn't even see it, since a large deers back is only 4 feet high. Then later she's disgusted by having to shoot groundhogs to supply meat for the dogs on the ranch.

Plus, it claims it took her 3 hours to make a path to the wood pile outside the cabin by using a garbage can, and two hours to haul in enough wood for three days...really? The same snow depth that moments earlier, a buck bounded away in.

And they keep using a bucket to crap in, which they carry in the vehicle, instead of just squatting in the bush. Why would anyone carry around a bucket of human waste in a vehicle, instead of doing it outside. ..totally ridiculous!
