Trip. My parents started using that word about a year ago—“one day, you’ll take a trip to be with us. Like an adventure.”
Javier Zamora’s adventure is a three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border. He will leave behind his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with a mother who left four years ago and a father he barely remembers. Traveling alone amid a group of strangers and a “coyote” hired to lead them to safety, Javier expects his trip to last two short weeks.
At nine years old, all Javier can imagine is rushing into his parents’ arms, snuggling in bed between them, and living under the same roof again. He cannot foresee the perilous boat trips, relentless desert treks, pointed guns, arrests and deceptions that await him; nor can he know that those two weeks will expand into two life-altering months alongside fellow migrants who will come to encircle him like an unexpected family.
A memoir as gripping as it is moving, Solito provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments. Solito is Javier Zamora’s story, but it’s also the story of millions of others who had no choice but to leave home.
The memoir was so effective because it was written as though by a young boy.. with simple but powerful sentences .. read by the author brilliantly. I was moved by the boys experience and by the comraderie and care of his adopted family. I also exoerienced , as though present, the physical and psychological pain the refugees experienced as they made their way through the desert to get to the u s …This memoir should be required reading in schools … especially in the US. thank you Javier for sharing your journey. I am so pleased you made it…

What makes hearing this story in his voice so powerful is the layered intimacy it creates. As he recounts his nine year old self's journey from El Salvador to reunite with his parents, we hear not just the words, but the breath, the pauses, the subtle inflections that carry the weight of memory. There's something so profound about the adult poet's voice carrying his child self's story - it bridges time in a way that text alone cannot.
As a Latina immigrant, I found myself recognizing my own family's story within Javier's - the hope, the fear, the sacrifice, the love that drives people to risk everything for the promise of reunion and a better life. This isn't just migration literature; it's a story about finding family in strangers, about childhood resilience, and about the power of memory to transform trauma into art.
I really can’t stress enough how the audio format allows us to hear not just what happened, but how it feels to remember it. Essential listening that will stay with you long after the final word.
A masterpiece of voice, memory and humanity
