Description

"Despite the challenges - an unreliable narrator, an intricate plot, a shifting timeline, and myriad characters - Stephanie Racine gives a flawless narration of this audiobook...This intense thriller is made even better by her performance." (AudioFile Magazine)

From renowned journalist Alice Feeney comes a riveting new audiobook, Sometimes I Lie.

My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:

  1. I'm in a coma.
  2. My husband doesn't love me anymore.
  3. Sometimes I lie.

Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can't move. She can't speak. She can't open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn't remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it.

Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from 20 years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

Ce que les critiques disent

"With tension comparable to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, plus the imaginative Now-Then-Before construction, Feeney unfolds just enough in each chapter to keep you page-turning for more, and her character development is excellent." (NJ.com)

"The creepy feeling at the back of your neck is 100 percent real." (People Magazine)

So good!

Every single twist caught me completely by surprise. This is the kind of book that has you staying up late into the night to find out what happens next. I would definitely recommend it!

A little slow but stick with it

At first I wasn’t sure I could stick with the story ...it seemed so slow but it was worth it in the end! Lots of great twists and turns.

Emotional Rollercoaster

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I haven't read a book in quite awhile and decided to try out an audio book. I think it may have influenced the way I felt about this book because there were a lot of other reviewers who hated all the characters. I personally liked Amber despite the ending. She had me pulled into all her lies. The ending was an emotional rollercoaster and for being my first audio book I was completely blown away. Growing up I read a lot of "Fear Street" books, which always had an open ending so the fact that this book had such an open ending didn't completely ruin it for me. However I did feel like some things were left unanswered like why Amber has OCD to begin with and why her parents supposedly stopped loving her. Also the parts with the sexual assault were extremely graphic and left me feeling uncomfortable. Otherwise I'd say this book was a solid 4/5. I would definitely recommend it.

I’m Confused

Let me just lead by saying that narrator was fantastic and I loved the book... I think?

Honestly, the story held my attention the whole way through until just about the end when it lost me completely. I love a psychological thriller that can shock me and this one did at first but then just as I was really getting excited for what was going to happen next it flipped on me again. The last flipped left me totally confused, was sharp and really didn’t make any sense.

I have read the last few chapters over and over to see if something clicks or I missed something but it doesn’t. I’ve also read reviews online that say the same thing.

I would give it 5 stars if someone would just explain to me wtf just happened ?!

Worth it!

A great story with good twists. The ending is a bit flat compared to the quality of the rest of the story. The voice actor does a really great job and is easy to listen to before bed.

Amazing!!!

This is one of those books that you truly believe in your mind that you have it figured out... and then you don’t. So many twists. I literally had a few WTF just happened moments in my mind as I listened to this. Truly an amazing book.

A little slow at first, but picks up and doesn’t stop from there. Highly recommend.

Great book. Highly recommended.

This is one I couldn't stop listening to. Usually I reserve my audible books for my weekly commute. This story was so intriguing that I had to keep listening to it late into the night when I got home on a Friday. One of the best psychological thrillers I've come across.

Wow!!!

I am an avid psychological Thriller reader, and it takes a lot these days to surprise or fool me. But THIS book, this book had me guessing and trying to figure it out until the very last chapter was read. Just WOW!! I have not been this fooled since I read 'Behind Her Eyes' which is one book I wish I could go back and 'unread' just so I could read it again! Don't hesitate to buy or spend a credit on 'Sometimes I Lie'. Absolutely one of my all time favorite psychological thrillers. Never a dull moment, and the writing was absolutely beautiful and narration was superb! Highly, highly recommend!

Baffled by the high ratings

I purchased on the strength of the high ratings and one critic's remark that this was on a level with Gone Girl and Girl on a Train. I should have known better. If Gone Girl was a DaVinci of twisty suspense, this was a paint-by-numbers Mona Lisa on black velvet. Instead of the satisfying and admiring "oh wow!" at the moment of revelation, the reader is left with more of a "wait--what?" The disparate pieces never come together into a coherent whole; there are too many gaping plot holes, inconsistencies, and generally unbelievable occurrences. One gets the feeling that the author sat down and plotted out "twists" with little regard as to whether the actions the characters took felt authentic. The diary is perhaps meant to evoke the journals in Gone Girl, but it doesn't work; Gillian Flynn may turn our perception of Amy completely on its head, but ties all the clues together into a tightly worked and neatly completed puzzle. This novel, by contrast, feels like a messily bound package of live ferrets trying to escape: shove a tail in at one end, only to find a nose wriggling out from the side. She leaves us with a cliffhanger at the end which promises to be resolved in a sequel...but I won't be fooled twice.

(I feel bad for narrator Stephanie Racine, who did a fine job with her part.)

A True Psychological Thriller!

NO SPOILERS: What could be worse than being stuck in a coma afraid for your life? This story is packed with twists and turns! If you enjoy suspense and mystery this one is great!! It’s also from a very unique perspective as it is spoken from the mind of a woman in a coma. It is hard to surprise me but the end really did just that.

There is so much rubbish in this genre but not this one. The author has earned the right to be compared with Gillian Flynn and Paula Hawkins. The narrator was excellent as well. Overall, bravo!!

I highly recommend this book.

Bad Seed X2

Three things you should know.
First: Sometimes, I find little holes in the most tightly woven plots and don't say anything because the book still kept me jumping up and down with my head spinning.
Second: Sometimes I have to backtrack to stay on track...and backtrack...and then realize that NO; I really did get it the first time. [Outrageous!] And move on.
Three: Unreliable narrators are fun; they *might* live lives full of blackmail, imaginary friends, arson, and possible genetic evilness coursing through their veins...and they might not (but here they kinda do).

Don't believe a thing this Amber chicky says in any of her successive approximations, just listen and enjoy -- but do keep track of where she is in her prevarication-packed tale. The book begins with Amber in a coma where she informs you of the 3 things you should know about her. 1. I'm in a coma. 2. My husband doesn't love me anymore. 3. Sometimes I lie. (She often lists trivia in groups of three. Listen for them because they are fun little bits of insight into a very sick little mind.) BTW, one of those 3 statements is true.

The coma monologues are the *Now* parts of the book; the prior to the accident parts are titled *Then;* and the *Before* parts are chilling excerpts from her childhood diaries. It'll have you wondering about inherited traits because one so young would have to live a horribly demented life under the tutelage of demonic beings to acquire such a malevolent personality so early on. Think of Damien smashing his tricycle into his *mother,* sending her cartwheeling over the upstairs railing down three floors onto the hardwood. Personally, I immediately thought of the movie The Bad Seed and little Rhoda and her tap shoes. And what a bonus...Amber has an adorable little sister...and that's all I'm saying about any of this!

As far as my rating, I thought this was a blast to listen to, maybe a bit of mental whiplash lingering from the back and forth, and I have a buzz-kill penchant of figuring out pretty intricate plots early; one of my few useless talents. Just don't read too much about it from reviews and enjoy -- think of the price you paid for this as admission to a wickedly fun ride.

Can I give this book 10 STARS!!!

WOW WOW WOW!

Best psychological thriller I have listened to in a LONG time!

This book was twisted, raw and at some points scary, it went back and forth between present day, (Amber in a coma) to a week prior, the build up to Amber being in a coma, and 1992, a series of diaries. The twists and turns this book takes was so entertaining and spooky, i found myself speeding up the reading just to see what happened next! It kept me guessing, and thinking and guessing the entire time. I loved every second!

GET THIS BOOK!

Wow! Twists and turns until the very end!

For a while i was looking for a book that not only has the big plot twists at the end but throughout the entire book. Just when you think you had it figured out- boom- another one. The narration was really well done (which I think can either make or break the book) definitely one of my new favorites

Disappointing

This was a good story until the end when it became confusing and difficult to follow. I am still not clear what was supposed to have happened - what a let down.

Liar

This book was so confusing. I think there was supposed to be a twist but it just ended disappointedly. I kept reading hoping some light would be shed but no luck.

Outstanding until the confusing ending

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd recommend it as it was spellbinding for most of the book, However I'd add a warning that the ending was so bewildering and frustrating that it took away much of the pleasure of the book. And reading websites that discussed the ending to get clarity only confirmed that everyone else was confused as well.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Since I was baffled throughout the book by the meaning and credibility of the characters I can't answer that.

What does Stephanie Racine bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She made the book MUCH better.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Hard to answer since sweet moments were never what they appeared to be.

Any additional comments?

The book keeps you intrigued by the fascinating relationships and drama it creates so I couldn't wait to find out what it all meant. I assumed when I didn't understand any of it at the end that I must have tuned out while listening and was ready to re-listen to the last part of the book. Fortunately I read several posts from people who likewise were completely confused by the ending making me realize it wouldn't help to re-listen.
