Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the hugely anticipated sequel to TJ Klune's The House in the Cerulean Sea, one of the best-loved and best-selling fantasy novels of the past decade.

A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life, built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six magical and so-called dangerous children who live there.

Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. And he is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth; Zoe Chapelwhite, the island’s sprite; and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children.

But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve.

And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they’re at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur’s story.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it.

Most Anticipated from Goodreads, Paste, Polygon, BookBub, and more.

The story isn’t that bad. Not at all the same quality as the first book. The narration though is unbearable.

The whiniest narration I’ve ever heard

I had been eagerly waiting for this instalment of the Cerulean Chronicles and it was well worth the wait. I laughed and cried throughout and truly love all of the inhabitants of Marsyas Island. The little bits of pop culture references and other one liners throughout were awesome. I love how the narrator expressed just the right emotions for the situation and his representation of all the various characters was amazing. I will definitely give this one a second (and maybe third) listen.

worth the wait (and the credit)

TJ Klune creates beautiful characters and makes us care deeply about each and every one. Daniel brings them to life with emotion and character voices that often seem silly at first but become so dear to me in a very short while.

amazing story and performance

I really liked this book. Just a unique concept. Definitely anti-christ, anti JK Rowel vibes like intended ! a happy story !

Great story! Loved the authors note at the end (which is not hate like another reviewer suggested)

Great story although the first book was more enjoyable. This sequel seemed a little more ‘platform-y’ which was seemingly confirmed by the strong words included at the end. The characters are imaginative as with the first. The narration got a bit over the top for my liking when it should have been neutrally toned infill. IMO it should have been the delightfully whimsical, funny, welcoming-to-all story it was but the acknowledgments ruined the idea of love for everyone even when there are disagreements. TJ Klune needs a lesson from Arthur Parnasis.

Great Story - could have done without the earful of hate at the end.

Such a delightful experience, with loveable characters and a ‘love wins’ perspective. Simple, joy based magic!

The story continues!

I adored The House on the Cerulean Sea, and was so excited to give this a listen. The narrator was way too over the top and quite honestly I had to stop multiple times because of how uncomfortable the performance was.

Lucy was the best character and the charm of him and the other children was the only redeeming part of this book. I'm queer myself and this book felt unbearably preachy and was an obvious comparison of the current American political climate against trans people in particular. If this book is healing or helpful for folks, great. But I think this could have been so much better if there was some more nuance instead of getting slapped in the face with moral lessons every few paragraphs.

Disappointing sequel to a wonderful book
