I love many of Carol Berg's books, and thus this book, with it's plodding pace, colourless characters, and complex yet uninteresting backstory (which I was too tuned out to care about and therefore keep track of), was a real disappointment.

I pushed through based on a Goodreads review that said the rest of the series was worth the slog, but since I have developed no attachment to either the characters or the world I think this is where I stop. Pick up The Spirit Lens instead if you're new to Berg's work and want a fun, interesting read.
